Key Relationships
To maintain effective communication with members of the
multidisciplinary pain team, anaesthetic services and palliative care,
orthopaedic and pain teams across the trust.
To liaise closely and maintain good working relationships
with Theatres, Physiotherapy department, X-ray department, Psychology
department, Out - patient department, health records and support staff.
To communicate effectively as a mentor for newly appointed
specialist nurse working within the chronic pain specialty, promoting
professionalism and undertake clinical work to maintain their professional
competence.
To maintain close links and build good working relationships
with Medical and nursing staff and other health professionals.
To liaise closely and maintain good working relationships
with referring General Practitioners and G.P unit, and community nursing
staff.
To maintain close links with mental health trust.
Staff Management Outpatient

Budgetary management Manage budget allocation in conjunction with
specialty manager demonstrating budgetary awareness, and the efficient and
effective utilization of resources.
Countywide working Excellent
communication links with chronic / acute pain team across the county. To
communicate effectively as a mentor for newly appointed specialist nurse
working within the chronic pain specialty.
Takes direct referral from consultants. To work as a highly
specialist practitioner autonomously taking direct referrals from consultants
for new trials of modulated electro analgesia devises.
Takes direct referral from GPs. To work as a highly
specialist nurse autonomously taking referrals direct from general
practitioners for new trials of modulated electro analgesia and follow-up.

Providing electro modulated analgesia treatments.
Works autonomously of medical staff i.e. no direct
supervision and independent decision-making. To work as a highly specialist
practitioner autonomously providing nurse led clinics reviewing follow-up
patients decision making and implementing treatment of electro analgesia,
acupuncture, medication advice, adding
patients directly to consultants waiting list for invasive treatments and
providing specialist advice and counselling to patients and carers, also via
telephone help line.

Communication & Relationship skills Receives multidimensional complex problems
involving pain management, emotional, psychosocial issues with patients /
carers suffering with chronic pain syndromes requiring lengthy consecutive
consultations i.e. counselling, reassurance, frequently requiring negotiation,
motivation, and education promoting patient interaction within an empathic
relationship.
Knowledge, training & experience. Current live registration on relevant
part of NMC register. RGN Level 1.

To participate in all mandatory annual training.
To provide formal mentorship for newly appointed specialist
nurse working within the chronic pain specialty.
Analytical & judgmental skills. To use highly advanced judgmental skills and a comprehensive
knowledge of pain management treatments and interventions to formulate a
specialist individual treatment plan based on evidence based practice,
constantly evaluate its effectiveness and modify as it is necessary. l
Planning & organizational skills. On daily basis priorities, organize and manage own clinical workload
effectively and efficiently.
Co-ordinate activities with other departments regarding
multidisciplinary pain clinic, i.e. theatres, x-ray, physiotherapy and clinical
psychology department.
Actively organize and contribute to departmental
multidisciplinary pain meetings / case conferences.
To play active part in the future development of
multidisciplinary pain clinic.
Physical skills. The
post requires physical skills, which have been obtained through training i.e.
acupuncture, electro nerve modulation.
Preparation of specialized equipment i.e. Radio frequency
lessoning machine, pressurized tourniquet.
Responsibility for patient / client care. To work as a highly specialist practitioner
autonomously within the nurse led clinic and multidisciplinary pain setting
assessing, planning, delivering, co- coordinating, and evaluating care for
patient and carers, providing specialist advise and counselling.
Responsibility for policy/service development ,Service development, aspires to develop
protocols for nurse led pain relieving treatments and pain management within
the service.
Provides evidence based patient information leaflets.
Provides guidelines for the care of patients pre and post
invasive treatments within day case setting.
Following completed documentation / policies aspires to
develop and participate in the setting up and running of a countywide pain
management programme.
Responsibility for financial & physical resources. Responsible for ensuring safe use of all
mechanical / electrical equipment used in the care and treatment of chronic
pain patients.
Maintain stock control of specialized equipment and
resources, responsible for selecting suppliers demonstrating budgetary
awareness.
Responsibility for human resources. Responsible for the teaching and education of all grades of
staff to provide supervision and support as necessary.
Act as a resource for other health professionals on chronic
pain conditions.
To take an active part in the in-service training of the
multidisciplinary pain clinic team as a recipient and when appropriate as the
provider.
To be involved in recruitment and selection of nursing staff
as required.
Responsibility for information resources. To use appropriate
Information Technology Skills to facilitate patient management.
To maintain comprehensive accurate assessment and treatment
records in medical notes as an autonomous practitioner, also in the form of
letters to referring agent i.e. GPs.
Responsibility for research & development. Involved in continuing Pain Audit
Collection System.
Regularly undertakes formal pain clinic patient satisfaction
audit.
Works as a highly specialist nurse autonomously seeing
patients for trial treatments of electro analgesic devises.
Freedom to act. To work
as a highly specialist practitioner autonomously providing nurse led clinics
reviewing follow up patients decision making and implementing treatments of
electro analgesia, acupuncture, medication advise, pain management strategies
and counselling. Adding patients directly to Consultants waiting list for
invasive treatments and providing specialist advise and counselling, via
telephone help line and multidisciplinary pain clinic.
Works as a highly specialist practitioner alongside clinical
physiotherapist seeing new patient referrals in the absence of the pain clinic
consultant.
Physical effort. Frequent
manual handling activities include positioning patients for treatments, pushing
wheel chairs, trolleys and items of equipment and assisting with the
transferring of patients.
Mental effort. The
post requires constant high mental effort. There is constant need for prolonged
periods of high concentration during consecutive subjective assessments and
nurse consultations.
Emotional effort. There is constant need for frequent
prolonged periods of consecutive counselling of very emotionally distressed
patients / carers.
Working conditions. There is frequent close contact with
patients, which exposes the professional to infections and possibility of
exposure to uncontained body fluids and needle piercing injury, verbal
aggression from patient/carers.
Job Purpose
Principle responsibilities include developing an innovated
approach to pain management. Implementing safe and effective practices for the
care and treatment of patients suffering with chronic pain.
To work as a highly specialist practitioner autonomously
within the multidisciplinary pain clinic, planning, delivering, co-coordinating
and evaluating care for patients with chronic pain syndromes.
To work as a highly specialist practitioner autonomously
developing nurse led clinics and providing telephone support / help-line to
review follow-up patients and to see new referral for trials of modulated
electro analgesia devises and acupuncture course.
To prioritise, organise and manage clinical workload and
personal clinical workload efficiently. Co-ordinate therapy and individual
treatment programmes for a case load of patients with chronic pain syndromes
and psychosocial problems, maintaining records as an autonomous practitioner.
To organise and manage the Multidisciplinary pain clinic
alongside the pain consultant, specialist physiotherapist, and clinical
psychologist.
The post holder will be part of the pain management
programme team and will help support the patients in managing their pain
outside of an acute setting and be involved in the triaging for the programme.
This is a new service for the pain management team in Worcestershire and will
involve group work with patients and support from the team.
