Job summary
We are looking to recruit a Highly Specialised Respiratory Physiologist to join our friendly team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS trust (WAHT).
This post is ideally suited for an experienced respiratory physiologist who is wanting to enhance their skills and help in the progression and development of a motivated and evolving department. WAHT has an established physiologist led sleep service, extensive links with the pre-operative anaesthetics team in using CPET for surgical assessment and with the Respiratory Consultants to streamline and optimise patient care.
The successful candidate will contribute to the provision of high-quality care when performing lung function, CPET, sleep analysis and treatment. Working closely with the respiratory consultant team, evaluating and developing the service provision. Work in partnership with other departments throughout the Trust to enable the provision of high-quality care. The successful candidate will also perform, analyse and report investigations independently, consulting with the medical staff on appropriate tests and use of investigations.
Our department is actively involved in delivering training and support the PTP and the STP.
The post holder will be based at Kidderminster Treatment Centre and be required to occasionally work across other WAHT sites, comprising: The Alexandra Hospital and Worcestershire Royal Hospital. All sites have good road links to M42 and M5 motorways.
Main duties of the job
The post requires highly specialist knowledge in the field of Respiratory Physiology and Sleep Medicine.
Initiate patients on CPAP therapy explaining sleep study results, device workings, care and cleaning of equipment, provision of lifestyle advice and DVLA guidance.
Follow-up with patients on CPAP therapy interpreting device therapy and compliance data alongside results of overnight oximetry and assessment of patient symptoms.
Issuing sleep diagnostic equipment including overnight oximetry and multi-channel sleep studies.
Issue results letters to patients following sleep studies and have clinical discussions with patients to assess suitability of CPAP Therapy
Initiate patients on BiPAP therapy in either spontaneous mode or adaptive servo ventilation.
Undertake and interpret measurements of blood gases by either capillary and/or arterial sampling.
Undertake routine and complex lung function measurements and provide training in these areas.
Be accountable for own professional actions and maintain professional registration.
Identify limitations in own clinical knowledge, skill or interventional capability and escalate to senior clinicians accordingly.
Independently acquire and report results for a range of highly specialised procedures and forwarding results to the appropriate referring practitioner when required and also highlighting any urgencies or concern.
Analyse and interpret clinical investigations and report urgent outcomes to the appropriate medical teams or clinicians.
