Job summary

The radiotherapy team at Worcester are advertising for the role of qualified radiotherapy engineer. This comes at a really exciting time for the department, with all 3 Elekta linacs and CT scanner due for replacement in the coming years.

You would join a team of 3 other engineers, 10 clinical scientists and 7 Dosimetrists to drive forward the replacement programme, gaining experience on cutting edge equipment in the process.

Although we are ideally seeking an experienced radiation engineer, we strongly encourage applications from newly qualified candidates. Candidates close to qualification may be considered for appointment at a lower band pending suitable experience being obtained.

Main duties of the job

You will provide specialist support to the radiotherapy service, with a focus on

  • ensuring the treatment machines and other specialist items of equipment are maintained, developed and repaired effectively and efficiently.
  • providing day-to-day technical support to the Clinical service provided at Worcestershire Oncology Centre, exercising your knowledge to minimise the impact of equipment faults and maintenance activities.
  • coordinate with IT technicians and clinical scientists to provide support for Clinical computing equipment and associated systems used within the Oncology Centre.
  • provide technical support and advice to clinical and scientific research & development in radiotherapy

Key Duties:

The Technical Services team provide equipment management and technical support to both clinical and non-clinical users of all equipment associated with radiotherapy treatment. The key aspects of this role are to:

Provide technical support to technical activities performed on clinical radiotherapy equipment and associated auxiliary items

Work flexibly and according to documented (ISO9001:2015) processes to ensure effective and safe machine performance with a minimum of clinical downtime

Respond promptly to machine faults that disrupt the clinical service

Provide Technical Services support for clinical computing equipment and associated systems used within the Oncology Centre

Provide Technical Services support to clinical and scientific research & development across radiotherapy, including the design and manufacture of bespoke clinical devices used in treatment

General duties

Professional & Managerial

The Jobholder will:

Support the smooth running of the service, including responding to queries and requests from other staff groups

Assist the Technical Services manager in their role to manage and coordinate all technical activity carried out on a broad range of complex radiotherapy equipment throughout the equipments lifecycle

Fully engage with multi-disciplinary teams of staff on internal project work.

Adopt the role of trainer or assessor as appropriate for specified equipment, providing technical training that may include giving presentations and organising structured in-house training sessions for other members of staff, including those outside of the radiotherapy physics team

Support engineering and other trainees as required, including assisting in the planning and provision of their formal training needs

Carry out internal resource management tasks that will facilitate the effective running of Technical Services. Such tasks may include equipment maintenance on highly specialised medical devices, stock and store area management, controlled documentation management and controlled software management.

Adopt a flexible attitude to changes in working arrangements and address technical emergencies as well as providing services across an extended working day

Participate in the departments on-call system

Maintain a detailed understanding of the principles and practice of medical equipment management, fault finding, preventative maintenance and calibration

Maintain knowledge of engineering products, materials and components as relevant to the service

Ensure understanding of and adherence to safe working practices, including knowledge of relevant legislation (including but not limited to IRR and IRMER)

Maintain advanced operation and maintenance skills on highly complex radiotherapy technology, undertaking advanced fault finding techniques on highly complex and very high capital medical devices (to include linear accelerators, Ortho-Voltage units etc)

Maintain highly developed, advanced operation and repair skills for extremely complex radiotherapy equipment, including associated service tools

Maintain highly developed electronic clinical engineering skills, including for the design and development of prototypes and high quality bespoke medical devices

Understand advanced technical documentation, being able to create required technical documentation when appropriate

Perform system maintenance and development for the clinical computing applications under Technical Services scope of responsibility

Provide direct technical support including advice to radiotherapy managers, key trainers and users of the technology.

The Jobholder will:

Support the departments research & development activity

Participate in internal project work, providing specialist technical and regulatory compliance support to the modification and manufacturing of medical devices, associated software and associated accessories.

The Jobholder will:

Support the maintenance and development of the departments ISO 9001:2015 quality management system (QMS).
