Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an accredited Clinical Vascular Scientist/Sonographer to join the small friendly team working in Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust providing a comprehensive range of non-invasive vascular examinations countywide.

The successful applicant will join an established team of senior clinical vascular scientists within the unit, 2 vascular scientist trainees and a lab co-ordinator. They will work closely with various other clinical staff, including 8 consultant vascular surgeons, radiologists, nurses and a wide range of other clinical/non-clinical staff both within the Trust and externally. The vascular lab has 3 ultrasound scanners, 2 Canon Aplio i800 and a Sonosite Edge II based within the department, utilising Philips EPIQ machines at tertiary units, a treadmill and facilities to measures ABPI and TBI.

You will be expected to perform a full range of vascular investigations including carotid artery duplex, upper and lower limb arterial duplex, abdominal aorta and iliac segments and all venous work, pre-operative vein marking, ABPI testing, toe pressure readings and bypass graft scanning including EVAR graft surveillance scans.

To be considered for appointment at band 7 the applicant will be expected to have a BSc in relevant science, full accreditation with the Society of Vascular Technology or working towards and/or HCPC registration with equivalent experience.

This post is for 37.5 hours per week (full-time).

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake and provide comprehensive written reports on range of vascular investigations and techniques as required by the vascular surgeons to diagnose arterial and venous conditions / disease
  • Assists in the planning of the daily workload of the Vascular Lab
  • Provides specialist scientific expertise in ultrasound, vascular ultrasound and other non-invasive examinations
  • Advises consultants and other medical professionals on specialist investigations for patients seen in the Unit
  • Arranges and checks the service, maintenance and breakdown work carried out on equipment within the Vascular Studies Unit by the manufacturer
  • Takes an active role in the Divisions multidisciplinary Clinical Governance programme
  • Supervises, teaches and trains a variety of staff, students and trainees
  • Presents results of research and development at local, National or International meetings to other healthcare professionals
  • Assists in a Quality Assurance programme for patient care and equipment

Job responsibilities

The post holder is a Clinical Vascular Scientist who plays a major role in the day-to-day running of the Vascular Laboratory Unit and outlying sites, in collaboration with the Vascular Surgery multidisciplinary team.

The post holder provides a high quality vascular ultrasound investigation service to support diagnosis and the decision making process for the patients treatment pathway within Worcestershire Royal Hospital and other sites within Worcestershire Acute Hospital NHS Trust and Wye Valley NHS trust.

The post holder also supervises, trains and assists appropriate staff in ultrasound, vascular imaging and assessment techniques.

Vascular ultrasound investigations of patients require judgement, involving complex facts and situations. This needs skilled analysis, comparisons and interpretation to provide reports to aid diagnosis and management of patients conditions.

The post holder also contributes to further development of the service.

Key Duties:

Clinical

Understanding of Quality Assurance of Ultrasound equipment.

Specialist training in the use of expensive and complex Vascular Ultrasound (and other non-invasive) equipment.

Examinations may need to be performed in the highly charged atmosphere of the operating theatre or intensive care unit, where rapid responses are required and situations are constantly changing.
