Job summary
- Receiving new patients and accompanying relatives/friends, explaining basic ward routine and answering initial questions pending Sister/Nurse in Charge being available.
- Compiling and maintaining ward admission book.
- Dealing with patients personal luggage in association with admitting nurse.
- Transfer of valuables to Finance Office and appropriate documentation.
- Preparing identity bracelets as required and bed labels etc.
- Issue of Hospital in Patient Certificates on instructions from Sister in Charge.
- Making arrangements for patients discharge, including transfers to other hospitals and wards, i.e. telephoning relatives, ordering transport, arranging District Nurse attendance, completion of forms for follow-up appointments at Out Patients, X-ray etc.
- Notifying General Practitioner of discharges, etc. by completion of pro forma.
- Checking Hospital Activity Analysis forms and completing basic data where necessary.
- Checking case notes, tidying and returning them to Medical Secretaries.
- Re-addressing discharged patients mail.
Main duties of the job
- Keeping patients case notes in good order, filing all reports e.g. X-rays, and keeping Notes Trolley tidy.
- Preparing case notes and X-rays for Doctors rounds, including obtaining outstanding or missing reports, etc.
- Arranging special appointment with other departments and hospitals as required by Ward Sister.
- Answering telephone and dealing with enquiries in accordance with instruction.
- Assist with data collection for the computerised In-Patient Administration System of emergency admission; inter ward/inter-hospital transfer, discharges or deaths by informing Medical Records Department.
- Assisting patients on wards receiving plated meals service.
- Completing maintenance requests.
- Preparing routine requisitions e.g., stationery, dressings, hardware/crockery etc. and submitting them to Stores as appropriate, in conjunction with Sister or Deputy.
- Preparing additional copies of Nurses Duty Rota.
- Distribution of patients mail.
- Assisting patients with reading/writing letters as required.
- Covering duties of other Ward Clerks during sickness, annual leave, etc.
- To act as messenger on ward business, e.g. to X-ray, Pharmacy Path Lab.
- Assist with the reception and comfort of relatives of very sick patients.
- Assist in any fact-finding project within the Unit.
