Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Orthoptic and wider Ophthalmology team providing eye care for the county of Worcestershire.

This role will be based at Worcester Royal Hospital within the Eye Clinic although some cross site working may be required at times.

There is scope for expanding the role into other areas of Ophthalmology and Orthoptics also and relevant training will be provided as required.

Main duties of the job

The duties of the role include the carrying out of Goldmann and Humphrey Visual Field assessments on a wide range of patients with many different types of Ophthalmic problems.

The carrying out of Biometry assessments on patients referred for Cataract assessment. This will be primarily be done using the IOL Master but will sometimes require use of the A-Scan machine.

Supporting the Glaucoma clinics as required.

Job responsibilities

To support the Orthoptic department in the provision of Visual Fields (Goldmann and Humphrey) in addition to Biometries (IOL Master and A-Scan).

Visual Field Analysis

To carry out Visual Field Analysis using any/all of the following- Goldmann perimeter, Humphrey field analyser, liaising with Specialist Orthoptists where necessary in complex cases.

Use of focimeter to determine strength of patient glasses prescriptions.

To choose appropriate instrument and programme to obtain optimum results according to patients age and ability. These patients range from children to the elderly and infirm patients, who can pose significant barriers to understanding.

To manoeuvre patients into optimum position at machines

To analyse the results to assess accuracy and highlight any sudden changes to the appropriate medical professional.

Biometry

To undertake biometry and keratometry for pre-operative cataract patients (often elderly and infirm patients with reduced mobility). This will be carried out either on the Zeiss IOL Master (non contact) or Spectrum A-Scan machine (contact). Both the Keratometry and A-scan measurements require high levels of hand/eye co-ordination and precision measurements are required for a successful surgical outcome, there is very little/no margin for error.

A working knowledge of the different types of equipment available is necessary so that the most appropriate can be used on the individual patient to obtain the most accurate results.

Orthoptics

Instil drops for use in ophthalmic procedures in line with current Patient Specific Directions as required during A-scans.

To support the smooth running of the Orthoptic department where needed by the provision of administrative support as required, such as the ordering of supplies using the IPROC system.

Measure and record visual acuity using the patients distance refractive correction as required

Use the hospital appointment system to make appointments and deal with patient enquiries.
