Job summary

Due to the expansion of a well established urology unit within our hospital there is an opportunity for band 5 staff nurses to join us. The unit, the Urology Intervention Centre, comprises a busy diagnostic area and will now include a Urology Decisions Unit which will treat ambulatory emergency patients who need same day care under the Urology team. Due to these changes we now have the opportunity to increase the amount of activity going through the department. These exciting band 5 roles will be suitable for either a newly qualified nurse looking to consolidate their training or an experienced nurse looking for a new challenge and to extend their knowledge in the urology diagnostic and assessment fields. As a member of the team you will be assisting practitioners in the investigations that take place on the unit, you will carry out interventions independently once competent to do so, and will assist the clinicians in caring for the patients who attend for same day emergency care. The decisions unit patients will either be discharged after treatment, rebooked for further assessment at a later date or admitted to ward 17, our Urology ward. You will have extensive contact with the Urology team including the Urology specialist nurses, the clinicians and the extended team working on our urology ward. Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role include:

  • development, evaluation and implementation of programmes of care including discharge planning for reach patient.
  • participation in preceptorship programmes as appropriate.
  • you will educate patients and their carers as required.
  • you will communicate effectively with patients, carers and members of the team.
  • you will be responsible for keeping yourself updated and increasing you knowledge and clinical skills as necessary for the department and in line with NMC requirements.
  • you will be accountable for maintaining standards within the department and will contribute to developing and monitoring those standards.
  • you will assist with the training of other members of staff once you are competent to do so.
  • in the absence of a more senior member of staff as as part of your development programme, you will be able to undertake clinical shift management within the departmane, with supprot.
