Job summary

This is an exciting new role to work with the Respiratory Nurse Specialists at the Worcester Royal and the Alexandra Hospitals.To work in conjunction with the respiratory nurse teams to provide a high quality, evidence-based care for patients with chronic respiratory diseases, while they are inpatients, as outpatients, and within their own homes.

The post holder will support the respiratory nurse team with both clinical and non clinical tasks, service improvement projects, patient education, and any other duties as delegated by the Band 7s

The post would be spread across both sites- likely to be 3 days a week at Worcester Royal and 2 days a week at Alexandra Hospital

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to complete competency based skills in inhaler technique, capillary blood sampling, basic observations, ambulatory oxygen assessments, NIV and CPAP mask fitting, iSTAT quality control

Support provision of education to respiratory patients with symptoms of breathlessness.

Assists with clinic preparation- printing forms/labels/ download NIV data from machines/AIRVIEW

Maintain the NIV and nebulisedantibiotic patient databases, escalating issues as they arise.

Receiving and dealing with telephone enquiries as appropriate

Sending out consumables to patients on long term treatments- masks, circuits, etc

To maintain paperwork needed for nurse led clinics- forms, patient education leaflets etc

Monitor stock levels and reorder as needed via IP{ROC

To ensure any returned NIV machines are cleaned/decontaminated prior to reuse.

Job responsibilities

Maintains a courteous and helpful manner at all times with patients, colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team

Answers patient queries and accepts referrals within the limits of training, knowledge and role. Demonstrates ability to direct referrals appropriately whilst prioritising and channelling as appropriate

Ensures prompt referrals to senior team members

Acts as an educational resource for patients, carers, colleagues in hospital and community settings, students and learners within limit of role

Use own initiative to work independently; adjust priorities based on discussion / negotiation with colleagues and activity on an on-going basis

Provides and receives routine information which requires tact or persuasive skills or where there are barriers to understanding. Occasional sensitive information to be communicated within the team.

Able to use electronic systems such as PAS, ICE, Sunrise etc

Complete incident reports on Datix and provides statements as appropriate

Able to contribute to department meetings.

Alerts qualified staff to changes in a patients condition

Alerts the team to abnormal finding or results

Completes relevant department documentation specific to the clinical area

Adheres to data protection guidelines and maintains confidentiality.

Must be able to demonstrate the English language proficiency level required for this post

To accept delegated duties for all aspects of own work

Carries out basic reviews of patients, both in the hospital and the community setting, to include: - Undertaking basic vital observations, oxygen saturation recordings

To be able to discuss the assessment and technique of inhalers MDI and DPI to educate the patient

To maintain a high standard of individualised patient care and to report any changes in condition to the member of staff in charge or appropriate professional

To assist and accompany the team on patient home visits as deemed necessary

To provide psychological support being sympathetic to culture, emotional, intellectual and social needs of patients and families and provide support as needed at your level and closely with other members of the MDT

To undertake any other duties required within the service, following consultation with other colleagues

Ability to assist members of the MDT in a range of procedures

Able to recognise triggers on NEWS chart and act according as per algorithm

Able to recognise signs of the deteriorating patient and alert qualified staff accordingly.
