Main duties of the job
As part of the Worcestershire
Acute Hospitals Cross-County Emergency Medicine Directorate, you will have the
opportunity to work at both Worcestershire Royal Hospital and the Alexandra
Hospital in Redditch. You will be joining us at an exciting time as both our
departments have seen significant investment to improve facilities for patients
and rest and training facilities for staff. Summer 2023 will see the opening of
a multi-million-pound state-of-the-art Urgent and Emergency Care centre on the Worcestershire
Royal Hospital site, with co-located EM, Acute Medicine, Radiology and SDEC
services to transform our activity.
Situated between the calm
tranquillity of the Malvern Hills and the hustle-and-bustle of Birmingham City
Centre, Redditch offers the best of both worlds. You could be a short distance

Job responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Immediate resuscitation of critically ill patients and
thereafter referral to the appropriate department of those patients who require
admission.
Definitive care of minor injuries and emergencies and
other routine ED clinical work.
Daily review and care of ED patients on the Clinical
Decision Unit when in operation.
Communication and liaison with other departments
within the hospital, both clinical and managerial.
Communication and liaison with agencies outside the
hospital including the emergency services and primary care trust.
Responsibility for the supervision, training and
education of junior medical staff, with an active role in the training of
nursing and other staff, including medical students. The post holder may be
named as the clinical supervisor of a number of junior medical staff. The Trust
receives medical students from both Birmingham and Warwick medical schools and
an interest in teaching and training would be an advantage.
The ED has an active teaching program for VTS trainees
/ FY2 and middle grades. The department also participates in the Regional Staff
Grade and Specialist Registrar training programs. The post holder will be
expected to make an active contribution to the planning and delivery of these
programmes.
Dealing with personnel and other managerial issues,
including ensuring that arrangements are in place for adequate staff to be
available in relation to treatment and care of patients.
Work with the clinical governance lead for the ED,
ensuring the continuing development of the service, including the achievement
of national targets.
Playing a major part in the development of Emergency
services within the county of Worcestershire. In keeping with national trends,
the county aims to ensure the development of a comprehensive and efficient
network of Emergency services over the next few years and the ED team will be
involved in identifying and implementing any changes necessary to achieve this.

The post-holder will provide support to the A&E
department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient
flow through the hospital.
The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory
service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.
The post-holder will attend cross county and cross
site meetings.
To collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high
quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trusts and
departmental objectives.
The post-holder will, if relevant, participate in the
on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out
of normal hours, to be shared equally with Consultant colleagues in post.
The Trust would expect a consultant whilst undertaking
oncall duties to attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically
necessary.
The consultant on call must be prepared to attend
willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing
team in the interests of patient safety. The post-holder, whilst undertaking
weekend on call duties, will attend the hospital to undertake patient reviews.
Please note that although the Job Description states 1.5 SPA for new consultants moving down to 1 SPA after the first year, this is now incorrect and current trust guidance is for all consultants to receive 2PA SPA to allow full participation in educational, academic, governance and leadership activities.
