Job summary

We are delighted to invite applications for the role of Clinical Skills Simulation Practitioner within the Worcester Acute Hospital Trust Undergraduate Teaching Academy, including the opportunity for maintaining clinical practice when the service allows.

This role comes at an exciting time within the Undergraduate Academy, with a recently refurbished simulation suite and plans for future expansion, including the opening of the Three Counties Medical School. We have a range of skills and simulation manikins, from neonates to elderly care, to help provide clinical skills teaching and high fidelity simulation to our undergraduate medical students.

This post supports our current clinical skills and simulation team in helping to provide the required skills and simulation programme to our undergraduate students and may also involve some postgraduate simulation where time allows.

Main duties of the job

This post is designed to support the delivery of undergraduate clinical skills and simulation training, ensuring that all students meet the required and agreed framework of competencies as set by the universities. The post will spend time delivering clinical skills in both the education centre and in the clinical environment. Time will also be spent assisting the simulation team in delivering hi-fidelity simulation.

The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively across boundaries, both internally and externally for the benefit of the students and department, sharing areas of expertise and best practice.

To role model and uphold high practice standards through the education and training they deliver.

About us

The Undergraduate teaching academy is part of the Corporate Medical Directorate and provides; training programs, support, advice and education for all Medical students and physicians assistants across a range of work streams. The Undergraduate clinical skills and Simulation team is part of the Undergraduate Academy that is responsible for the delivery of clinical skills and simulation training, supporting the students within the clinical areas to meet their identified competencies as set by the University/s.

Key Duties:

Clinical

Demonstrating advanced communication skills, the post holder will be expected to liaise effectively with all key members of the multi-disciplinary teams.

The post holder will support multi professional practice and learning across the organisation, contribute to the development of skilled professional workforce and facilitate a range of educational training and learning opportunities in the clinical classroom and environments.

The clinical skills trainer will plan, organise and coordinate training for the Undergraduate Teaching Academy. They will ensure that all students clinical skills and simulation learning objectives, as set out by the Universities are met and comply with the organisational and National training and development objectives.

Provide educational support to all undergraduate students in practice, where the need has been identified, assessing their competency as indicated in their clinical skills passports, identifying any skills gaps and provide additional training sessions/support and to provide the students with feedback on their progress.

Assist and review training packages, updating of competency assessment packs ensuring completion of specific measurable objectives.

Promoting and maintaining a concept of holistic care which incorporates a patient centred approach to all patients.

Support and deliver teaching programmes using a variety of approaches that includes: Classroom teaching, patient bedside coaching, mentoring, clinical updates, and multi-professional simulation sessions if required.

Work with all staff to ensure that all practitioners have a clear understanding of accountability through the NMC/HCPC & GMC Code and standards.

Facilitate the implementation and evaluation of National clinical guidelines, including local policies and protocols.

Identify and report potential issues or concerns which may compromise the quality of patient care, liaising with the Academy team/ Ward managers/ multi-disciplinary teams as appropriate.

To act as a pastoral advisor and advocate to all students within the Academy.

Understand and demonstrate to other multi-professional colleagues good current clinical practice as well as emerging clinical practice which must be supported by nationally based standards that are empirically/research based.

Provide support for staff in effectively addressing concerns and where required provide support to investigate clinical incidents or complaints in line with hospital policy. Work with colleagues to promote a culture positive of reporting concerns, incidents related to patient quality and safety.

To provide a skills and competency based approach to the training, development and support of all medical students in placement across the organisation.

To act appropriately in the event of any accidents and emergencies, and to report any incident according to hospital policy.

To abide by the legal and statutory rules relating to clinical practice and to maintain a standard of conduct in accordance with the NMC/HCPC and GMC professional Code, including Hospital and National Policies.

Training and Education

Co-ordinate and support specific programmes of training and education to support the clinical skills and simulation service, using a wide range of approaches to deliver this.

To actively promote and facilitate a learning environment in clinical areas through a wide range of approaches.

Attend key groups around training and education both internally and externally and provide feedback to the clinical leads.
