Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our undergraduate medical education simulation team. We are looking for an enthusiastic motivated person who enjoys working as part of a team providing technical support assistance for simulation and clinical skills teaching. The role is predominately to support the technical side to ensure the smooth running of the undergraduate medical education mandatory simulations.

This would appeal to candidates who have either a technical background or an interest in simulation and audio-visual technology.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for autonomously setting clinical skills equipment and provide technical support of simulation based software within the academy.

The role will involve supporting the lead technician and nurse with the maintenance and set up of the training equipment and environment to support clinical skills and simulation training, exams, and other educational activities across the Trust sites.

The post holder will be required to be flexible to deliver the service in line with current and expanding business needs.

The department operates across all Trust sites and the post holder will be expected have a driving license to travel to different locations, when their role requires them to do so.

About us

The Undergraduate teaching academy is part of the Corporate Medical Directorate and provides; training programs, support, advice and education for all Medical students and physicians assistants across a range of work streams. The Simulation team is part of the Undergraduate Academy that is responsible for the delivery of clinical skills and simulation training, supporting the students within the clinical areas to meet their identified competencies as set by the University/s.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Key Duties:

General Duties, Skills and Responsibilities

Ensure each piece of equipment is fit for use and meets the supplier safety recommendations, liaising with lead technician and suppliers as required.

Ensure that correct disposables and sufficient supplies are available during courses and that the amounts of each provided are in line with the operating procedure.

Provide technical support for scenario based high fidelity simulation and skills training as required.

Working with the lead technician, to review, report and control all stock levels of equipment, disposables to ensure that minimal levels are observed and all activity is fully supported.

Provide equipment usage demonstrations for new users and produce user guides for new equipment/simulation systems.

Respond to equipment loan requests and ensure equipment that is to be loaned is in good condition.

Undertake regular handling of equipment with appropriate equipment provided.

In accordance with service need, undertake regular maintenance audits daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly identifying any issues for repairs/replacement etc. to lead technician.

Ensure that all equipment is appropriately cleaned and stored after use in line with Infection Control guidelines.

Responsible for safety testing/calibration of equipment and PAT testing equipment when necessary.

Ensure that regular safety testing / calibration of equipment in all areas is carried out and recorded accurately.

Ensure that any damaged equipment is reported to the appropriate lead technician and Medical Engineering and / or other maintenance services and that the damage is recorded and repaired as per instruction.

Continuously develop own skills and expertise in the technology enhanced clinical training and take every opportunity to learn about emerging simulation technologies, platforms and software This includes:

Networking with other simulation centres and simulation technicians

Visiting other centres to learn about their innovations

Actively researching new technologies for learning and making recommendations for their adaptation in the Trust

Diagnose and escalates major faults to the lead technician/nurse.

Interprets operational manuals and is able to use technical equipment.

Organisation of the simulation learning environment room booking system.

Plans ahead to ensure resources and equipment required are booked from the equipment library and in-situ for teaching activities.

Plans and organises straight forward maintenance tasks within scope of competence.

Prioritises technical faults and is able to problem solve.

Audits equipment and facilities usage giving feedback on innovative Technology Enhanced Learning developments.

To support the Simulation Team in evidencing existing national guidelines for NHS England and ASPiH are followed.

Monitor the life span of the equipment and resources and make recommendations for replacements and upgrades to the lead technician/nurse.

Liaise with manufacturers and service companies to establish efficient communication and helpdesk trouble shooting.
