Job summary

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to recruit a Consultant Clinical Haematologist. Successful candidates will join a team of 7 Consultants. The Directorate provides services across 3 hospital sites within the county of Worcestershire. The candidate will benefit from working within a friendly and experienced team of Specialist Nurses and Laboratory Staff.

As a Trust we are actively involved in developing the training program for students from the Three Counties Medical School based in Worcester which opens in September 2023. We look forward to establishing links with the new Medical School in addition to well-established relationships with the University of Birmingham and the University of Warwick.

As part of the Consultant Advisory Appointment Committee, shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide a 5 minute presentation on the topic: "The current challenges facing DGH Haematology and the way forward."

Main duties of the job

The Haematology Consultants work closely to provide a BCSH level 2b/3 inpatient clinical Haematology service for patients of Worcestershire and Herefordshire in a busy 18 bedded designated ward at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. This includes the shared care autologous stem cell transplantation programme with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

The department is fully staffed with experienced middle grade doctors and a dedicated nursing team including Clinical Nurse Specialists, an Advanced Clinical Practitioner and clinical trials nurses.

The weekly joint Haematology MDT meeting serves the patients of Worcestershire and Herefordshire, with attendance by dedicated haematopathologists, radiologists and oncologists.

Worcestershire Oncology Centre is a Cancer Centre which has been open for the last 5 years with a full team of Clinical Oncologists and Medical Oncologists.

The Haematology Department is actively involved in clinical research, and is a major recruiting centre for Haematological NCRI Trials

Worcestershire Royal Hospital is now a regular FRCPath Part 2 Centre and the new appointee can participate in the examination system after training and approval from the Royal College of Pathologists

This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

  • A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
  • The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.
  • The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.
  • The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.
  • The post-holder will attend cross county and cross site meetings.
  • To collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trusts and departmental objectives.
  • The post-holder will, if relevant, participate in the on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with Consultant colleagues in post.
  • The Trust would expect a consultant whilst undertaking on-call duties to attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. The consultant on call must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.
