Job summary

EPUT is looking for an enthusiastic Specialty Doctor in Eating Disorders to join the team based at Sankey House, Basildon.

The Essex Community Adult Eating Disorder Service (CAEDS) is accessible to individuals over the age of 17 1/2, registered with a GP within Essex. This post lies within the north team, which covers west, mid and north east Essex. This includes Colchester, Tendring, Chelmsford, Braintree, Maldon, Harlow, Uttlesford and Epping areas.

Main duties of the job

We have a strong team of highly qualified staff which includes a range of psychological therapists, nurse specialists, community nurse practitioners, a specialist dietitian, GPs with Extended Roles (GPwER), physical health support workers and senior support workers. The role of the CAEDS speciality doctor is to complement the existing professional skill mix, with the intention of providing supportive and comprehensive management of an individual's eating disorder.

The post holder will be one of the medical staff, supported by the GPwERs working across West, Mid and North East Essex, thereby providing input to both parts of the team. The CAEDS service includes a Consultant post for the south team and south east and south west localities; there will be a requirement to work collaboratively with that post holder and provide short term cover in the event of illness/annual leave etc.

The service works on an outreach model. It will be necessary for the post holder to be flexible in the location of appointments. Essex CAEDS works closely with other services in the Trust especially with the Adult Community Mental Health Services, in-patient units, the Mental Health Liaison services and the SET-CAMHS Eating Disorders Service for Children and Young People (provided by NELFT)

Job description

  • To provide day-to-day management of patients in the Community Adult Eating Disorder Service including outpatient appointments, reviews, discharge planning meetings, and professionals meetings with other services to jointly manage the care of patients. . The number of patients that the post holder will be primarily responsible for will be negotiated with the Consultant / Medical Director through the job planning process.
  • To provide general medical care, including undertaking appropriate physical examinations and organising relevant investigations as deemed necessary.
  • Use appropriate therapeutic skills in the treatment of patients.
  • To ensure all written records are maintained as appropriate.
  • To communicate effectively with the Consultants to ensure adequate supervision of clinical decision making.
  • The post holder will be under the supervision of a consultant psychiatrist and will have at least one hour clinical supervision per week as recommended by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • To participate in the weekly MDT meetings.
  • To attend education meetings on Tuesday mornings as part of their continuing professional development.
  • Whilst the duties of the post holder are mainly described above, the needs of the service change, and the post holder will be expected to be flexible in this respect.
