Job responsibilities

To deliver care, in accordance to Trust policies, procedures and guidelines, according to competencies as delegated by the Lead for Phlebotomy, therefore providing safely carried out procedures and maintaining high standards of care at all times. To ensure that all staff follow standard operational procedures.

To provide advice to clients and clinical staff on the appropriate requirements for blood sample collection

To ensure that all samples are labelled and processed correctly for collection by the Transport Driver and ultimately the relevant pathology service.

To record accurate information to support data analysis in relation to types and numbers of blood tests obtained.

To train and use EPR and CERNER MILLENIUM or any other relevant information system for the post, to comply with the data protection act and

follow local codes of practice to ensure appropriate action is taken to safeguard confidential information

To undertake any relevant training activities as required by the post and to maintain Mandatory annual training in line with Trust policies.

To ensure all stock levels are maintained to ensure a continuing community service without disruption to the clients.

To communicate effectively and sensitively with patients concerning the phlebotomy procedure, with due respect for the patients welfare and dignity. To be able to work in a situation where personal tact, diplomacy and judgement is used and could be questioned. To professionally interact within a multidisciplinary NHS team, with clients and their guardians and carers.

To ensure staff follow a strict hand hygiene policy within phlebotomy at all times in line with Infection Control policies. To maintain a clean and hygienic area for the purpose of taking blood.

To be able to confidently, discreetly and directly deal with clients infected with potentially hazardous and possibly life threatening body fluids as part of your working practice.

To work flexibly as part of a team and cover for colleagues as required. To work as and when necessary at any Centre with in ELFT trust sites.

To be able to participate in covering a 6 day a week Phlebotomy service that would include weekend working across various sites as required for service delivery.

To carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision, once deemed competent.

To review and reflect on practice and identify areas for self development through participation in the annual appraisal system.

To exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent reliable attendance.

- To promote a positive image of the Trust.

Where deemed appropriate to act as a mentor to new or junior members of the team to maintain clinical standards.To exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent reliable attendance

Person Specification

Education/ Qualification/ Training

Essential

• GCSE or equivalent standard of education with emphasis on numeracy and literacy
• Proof of phlebotomy training/ Venipuncture Competency

Experience

Essential

• Proven experience as a phlebotomist for over 1 year.
• Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology relevant to obtaining blood by an invasive procedure.
• Recognize contraindications and complications arising from the procedure and to give appropriate advise to the client or how to seek further advise
• Ability to work under pressure in a busy environment
• oAble to communicate with clients and members of the multi-disciplinary teams in a professional manner

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

• Knowledge of all Health and Safety procedures and Infection Control Policy
• Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team, within a 6 days shift patterns
• Effective communication skills, both written and oral in English
• Competent Venipuncture procedure with the standard techniques and vacutainer system. Meeting the daily Targets and pressure handling, able to work efficiently within a busy environment.
• Ability to receive and carry out instruction in a timely and appropriate manner
• Competent in use of Windows software
