Job summary

We have an opportunity for a Band 7 Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to join a multidisciplinary team working on the Mother and Baby Unit in East London. This post will be providing maternity cover from June 2025 for 12 months.

The East London Mother and Baby Unit team is a dynamic and forward thinking multidisciplinary team working with women in the perinatal period and includes psychiatry, clinical psychology, parent-infant therapy, nursing, occupational therapy, nursery nurses and other professionals. This post is based in City & Hackney and the psychology team work with women and their families while they are inpatients on the Mother and Baby Unit (MBU). There are close links between the East London MBU and the City & Hackney Community Perinatal Team and there may be opportunities within this role for working within the community team. Team psychologists provide both direct psychological interventions and work indirectly with the team, as well as being involved in teaching, training, audits and research.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will offer a broad psychological contribution to the work of the East London MBU team. This will include formulations and psychological input to care plans, individual assessment and therapy (including cognitive assessments where appropriate), group therapy, teaching and training, staff support and supervision. The post will also use research skills for audit, policy and service development.

Essential

  • Postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (or equivalent if trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS OR Doctorate in Counselling Psychology as accredited by the BPS
  • BPS Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Practitioner Psychologist

Desirable

  • Further training in a therapeutic modality relevant to perinatal mental health

Experience

Essential

  • At least two years' work experience in the NHS
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of patients across the full range of multidisciplinary care settings including outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups across the whole life course and presenting problems which reflect the full range of clinical severity.
  • Work within at least two therapeutic modalities

Desirable

  • Experience within perinatal mental health provision, particularly inpatient mother and baby units.
  • Experience of developing and delivering specialist training programmes.

Skills

  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, including the use of theoretical models to analyse information and to develop formulations upon which to base choice of treatment.
  • Working knowledge of the practices and approaches of other key disciplines, professions and agencies involved in the care and management network, including medical, employment, social, educational and criminal justice systems.
  • Doctoral-level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex, multivariate data analysis as practised within the field of clinical psychology.
