Job summary

We are excited to offer a role for a counselling psychologist-in-training/qualified clinical associate in psychology/health psychologist-in-training, to work with a clinical caseload that will come from across the borough of Newham. This role involves working with community health teams (physical health) and providing interventions for patients in the community (in their homes). It is not possible to see clients onsite where the services are based. You would also be working alongside highly specialist psychologists to carry out psychological assessments, cognitive screening and brief psychological therapy & psychological interventions for housebound patients across the extended primary care teams (EPCT) based at East Ham Care Centre, and also with the Community Neuro-Rehabilitation Team, also co-located at East Ham Care Centre.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based interventions to people living with physical health conditions, under the supervision of a qualified practitioner psychologist (both clinical & counselling) e.g. this includes working with ambivalence to engage with medical or physical treatment and symptoms of depression and anxiety (including needle phobia that impacts self-management of diabetes)
  • To communicate constructively with a range of healthcare professionals in a variety of services, including nurses, social workers, allied health professionals (AHPs) and medical colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary community team and liaise with external agencies to facilitate and enable psychological interventions.
  • Build relationships with partner agencies.
  • To model and disseminate psychological skills including motivational interviewing and health coaching models with nursing staff and with patients
  • Proactively engage patients and their carers and/or family in self-management skills and helpful health behaviours
  • To record and collate evidence that supports the efficacy of psychological interventions with community health patients
  • Engage patients in appropriate community health groups and work in partnership with long-term conditions services to promote integrated ways of working.

About us

You will be part of an ELFT London Community Health Psychology hub and will also liaise and work collaboratively with our Tower Hamlets counterparts. You will be visiting patients in their homes and returning to base at East Ham Care Centre, East Ham where you will be supported by a larger multi-disciplinary team.

The psychological work in Community Health Newham is integrative and draws on multiple theoretical perspectives, including cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic and systemic models in formulation and therapy - you will have the opportunity to use psychodynamic therapy models, CBT, ACT, mindfulness approaches and trauma-informed models.

  • Post-graduate skills training with a psychological model, for example systemic, cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, ACT, trauma-focussed therapeutic models, narrative therapy etc.
  • Experience working in a psychological way and in a psychological setting
  • An ability to manage exposure to distressing/highly emotional circumstances.
  • Experience of receiving professional and clinical supervision
