Job summary

The Perinatal Mental Health Team have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Mental Health Nurse to work with pregnant and postnatal women who have moderate to severe and complex mental health needs. This role includes working with fathers and partners, male applicants are encouraged to apply as we develop the service offer further.

Main duties of the job

The Bedfordshire and Luton Perinatal Mental Health Team is a specialist mental health service in the community designed for pregnant and postnatal women with severe and complex mental illness. The aim of the team is to detect, prevent and treat perinatal mental health problems to improve the experience of pregnancy and the postpartum period for women and their families. Women at risk of relapse following delivery are assessed early in pregnancy to allow them time to consider the treatment and support options available. The team works collaboratively with women, their families and other professionals, to plan care for pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Job responsibilities

Applicants for this position will need to be a trained mental health nurse with experience of having worked within adult acute mental health settings. The post will involve very close working not only with mental health services but wider social care services and so requires an individual with dynamic and exceptional communication skills.

A good working knowledge of child and adult safeguarding is essential, and you should have sound clinical skills, and the ability to thoroughly assess risk, formulate safe and effective management plans, and document this clearly and concisely.

Supervision and learning opportunities are actively encouraged and a full induction will be provided to the successful candidate.

Due to the position requiring the ability to travel between sites and offer home visits, a car owner/driver is essential.

  • oEvidence of professional qualification in nursing
  • oEvidence of registration on Part 3 of NMC register
  • oEvidence of continuing professional development including recently in perinatal mental health practice and safeguarding children practice

  • oClinical supervision training
  • oQualifications/ training in specialist skills e.g. therapeutic/ psychological interventions

  • oPost qualification experience

  • oExperience of managing a caseload of service users via CPA with evidence of completing high quality assessments
  • oExperience of working in a complex multi-disciplinary/ multi-agency context
  • oExperience of undertaking complex nursing and mental state, risk and needs assessments
  • oExperience of working in a multi- racial/cultural community and of working with interpreters
