Consultant Psychiatrist in Forensic Psychiatry
This substantive 10 PA Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist post is based within the East London Forensic Service. The successful candidate will work in the acute medium secure service at the John Howard Centre, on Ludgate Ward.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team on Ludgate Ward, which is a 17 bedded medium-secure ward. The ward provides care to a complex population of men with acute mental health needs. There are typically one to two new admissions a month. The average length of stay on the ward is between one and two years but can be considerably shorter than this.
The role also involves seeing referrals for admission to male medium secure services, along with three consultant colleagues. In total, approximately six referrals are received for admission a month.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary team on Ludgate Ward, which is a 17 bedded medium-secure ward. The ward provides care to a complex population of men with acute mental health needs. There are typically one to two new admissions a month. The post-holder may be required to provide cross-cover for urgent issues to other wards within the service.
Ludgate Ward is fully staffed with a multi-disciplinary team including a full time CT grade doctor, Modern Matron, Clinical Nurse Manager, nursing team, and a full time psychologist, OT and Social Worker. There is also dedicated admin support. Specialist education resource is available, as are Arts Therapies.
The consultant, once approved as a Clinical Supervisor, will supervise the CT grade doctor attached the ward. ST doctors are attached to the ward on rotation. Each CT doctor and ST doctor has a named Educational Supervisor who can offer support both to the trainee and the Clinical Supervisor. The Director of Medical Education in the Trust is Professor Frank Rohricht.
Section 12 duties
The post holder is expected to take part in Hackneys Section 12 day-time rota, along with all of the other Section 12 approved doctors working for the Trust in Hackney. This is a commitment of one day approximately four times each year.
On Call and Out-of-Hour Commitments
The consultant will participate in the forensic on-call rota for East London. There is a CT, an ST and a general adult consultant on-call at the same time.
All patients in seclusion at the John Howard Centre or Wolfson House must be seen by an Approved Clinician every 24 hours, including at weekends. When on-call at weekends consultants are likely to have to conduct seclusion reviews. On average consultants on-call do two weekends each year, and additional annual leave is granted due to the weekend work commitment (presently 2.5 days/year).
The rota is a 1:23 system, with on-calls being for one week at a time. The availability supplement for this commitment is 1%.
