Job summary

Perinatal Senior Clinical/Counselling Psychologist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to work in our Community Perinatal Mental Health Team. Newham Perinatal Mental Health Team is a specialist mental health team that supports women and birthing people in the perinatal period with moderate to severe mental health difficulties using a multi-disciplinary approach. The team is recruiting for a permanent 0.5 WTE (two and a half days) band 7 Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to join the psychology service within this dynamic team. The successful post holder will be passionate about perinatal mental health and delivering interventions including assessments, one to one and group therapy. The post holder will work closely with psychology and non-psychology colleagues within the team and be part of a wider trust wide perinatal psychology network. You should have a keen interest in promoting equality and diversity within psychology, an awareness of the borough we work in and the challenges of existing health inequalities.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Offer psychological assessments and interventions, including one to one and group
  2. Contribute to the development of psychology within the PMHT, in line with the boundaries of your role.
  3. Contribute to psychological, trauma informed working with service users in the team.
  4. Liaise and consult with interfacing services, including Newham Talking Therapies, Secondary Care Psychological Services, Home Treatment Team and Acute services.
  5. Maintain continuous professional development in line with the expectations of your role and accreditation

  • Cultural awareness and competence: Understanding and awareness of the potential impact of racism, discrimination & disadvantage on the mental health of Black and ethnic minority people. Able to provide a cultural competent service. Ability to reflect critically on one's own identity. Commitment to examining and challenging one's own biases and developing inclusive services and work places. Experience of working with interpreters.
  • Analytical & judgemental skills: Able to draw upon a broad theoretical knowledge base in the analysis of highly complex facts or situations to arrive at appropriate formulations. Able to compare and select from a range of intervention options, (minimum of two therapeutic orientations) based on formulation. Able to provide brief therapeutic interventions. Awareness of government frameworks and guidelines relating to mental health, e.g. NHS Long Term Plan.
