An opportunity has arisen within our in-patient wards for enthusiastic and innovative Band 8B Deputy Borough Lead Nurse - to join our busy and motivated Senior Nurse Leadership Team across all inpatient wards. This is a fantastic opportunity to lead on continuous development and improvement of nursing in providing high quality care for service users. It also calls for visible and inclusive leadership as part of a multi-disciplinary team and other teams across the service.

City & Hackney mental health Inpatient services has continued to develop and improve the quality and standard of care provided to our local community. This is an exciting opportunity to join the team as we continue to build on our successes, take on new challenges and improve the quality of care we provide. The post holder will need to have experience of leadership, management of teams and the ability to manage complex relationships both internally and externally. Inpatient services need to be responsive and adaptive and this will require a high level of organisation, structure and responsiveness.

Main duties of the job

City & Hackney Centre for Mental Health is a mental health hospital based at Homerton Hospital that provides assessment and treatment for male and female individuals experiencing acute mental health difficulties who are aged under 65. The service sets out to provide effective mental health care to help service users recover from a mental health crisis, and support their rehabilitation to get back on track with their lives. We have 4 acute wards, an early intervention ward, male psychiatric intensive care ward, regional mother and baby unit and a Health Based Place of Safety.

To be successful in this role, you will need to be enthusiastic, forward thinking and have a keen interest in working with multiple nursing teams, and with wider MDT colleagues.

As Deputy Borough Lead you will assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Borough Lead Nurse, and will provide assurance and feedback to the Directorate Management Team on the safe delivery of service.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work in partnership with the Borough Lead Nurse (BLN) to ensure all aspects of nursing care are developed to a standard which provide the best possible outcome to service users at City & Hackney Centre for Mental Health.

The post holder will deputize for the BLN in their absence taking responsibility for the operational management of the service.

In partnership with the BLN, the post holder will:

  • Have management responsibility for the inpatient service
  • Set up clear monitoring / feedback / structure / system that enables the DMT to both understand and improve nursing practice across the service
  • Be the nurse lead for service developments
  • Promote kindness and compassion as the basis of all nursing care within the service
  • Ensure that nursing practice across the service reflects the values of the organisation
  • Work closely with the Clinical Director, ACD and Borough Director to effectively manage beds, admissions, and discharges
  • Work with the DMT to reduce violence and aggression in the service and the use of restrictive interventions such as seclusion
  • Provide advanced advice, support and expertise both within the service and to other stakeholders
  • Help to promote effective MDT working across the service
  • Work with the DMT to ensure Quality Improvement (QI) projects are developed across the service to constantly improve the service provided to users and carers
  • Lead on the local development of policy and practice that reflect the needs of service users, implementing evidence-based practice contributing further to the knowledge base by evaluation of practice
  • Work with the DMT on local workforce development and recruitment initiatives
  • Undertake Senior Manager on call duties as required
  • Co-ordinate, manage and respond to emergency situations

Job Purpose:

In partnership with the BLN, the post holder will be the responsible lead for local induction of nurses entering the service and overseeing the education, training and professional development of the nursing work force for the designated area of responsibility. Support the BLN to provide visible nursing leadership, advice and support to nurses in the borough. Ensure that all relevant statutes and professional guidance on nursing are reflected in local strategies, procedures and plans and that all nurses work within these statutory and regulatory frameworks.
