Job summary

East London NHS Foundation Trust currently provides mental health and learning disability services in Luton and Bedfordshire. The Bedfordshire Mental Health service has an exciting opportunity for the post of a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Manager to lead and manage Crystal Ward (Luton).

The post will be for a fixed term cover period of 12 months. Both internal and external applicants are encouraged to apply.

Crystal Ward is an 18-bedded in-patient unit caring for service users of adult working age (18-65 years old) - who are experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and need to be nursed in a 24/7 staffed care environment. Crystal Ward admits and cares for service users who are both informally admitted and those detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) - amended 2007.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Nurse Manager role is pivotal in delivering safe, effectiveness and service excellence within the team dynamic. Our services aim to provide a high standard of treatment and care in a safe and therapeutic setting for service users in the acute and vulnerable stage of their illness. The post holder will be required to provide comprehensive, professional, operational, effective leadership and managerial support to the unit whilst being supported by the Modern Matron.

The Clinical Nurse Manager will have 24-hour operational responsibility and accountability for the provision and management of high quality nursing care; and for the treatment of service users within the inpatient service area. You will be required to clinically lead, develop the service and nursing team, support care delivery, work with service users and staff to ensure the provision of practices that respond effectively to both individual and service need.

The post holder will provide effective clinical leadership to ensure all nursing staff receive the appropriate supervision and support in conjunction with an agreed professional development plan. Furthermore, the post holder will be responsible for establishing and maintaining team systems and processes for effective operation of the team, and to ensure compliance with the achievement of Key Performance Indicators.

The successful candidate must display a considerable degree of initiative, possess mature judgement and maintain a calm, friendly and efficient manner when dealing with service users, their relatives, colleagues and visitors. The post holder will be required to work independently using initiative, and applying a high degree of confidentiality to all of their work. They must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills, manage competing demands and organise their own work in meeting deadlines in order for the smooth running of the ward area.

The successful candidate will need to be passionate about providing compassionate care and must be efficient and well organised. They will need to be good role models, have excellent communication skills, and be able to work with this vulnerable patient group and support carers in time of distress.

They will need to demonstrate knowledge and skills of caring for both the physical and mental health needs of this patient group, and to be able to ensure that staff are providing care to the expected standard. The individual needs to bring a proven record of leading quality care and service improvement, also development of creativity and inclusive care environments.
