Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speech and Language Therapist to join the new Newham SAFE speech and language therapy (SLT) team. SAFE focuses on young people whose attendance and reduced engagement at school is affecting their learning and leaving them vulnerable to involvement in serious violence, gangs and county lines. The SAFE SLT team is based with the main schools SLT service, along with links with the Newham Youth Justice Service Speech and Language Therapist to enable holistic working. The post holder will work with schools and the local authority to identify and support hidden or unrecognised speech, language and communication needs in children and young people in school years 5-9. This includes opportunities to work with local authority resilience, confidence and relationship practitioners. The post holder will also work in close partnership with the band 7 Highly Specialist SLT in developing this brand new early intervention speech and language therapy service, refining pathways and models of provision to support young people.
This is a mixed post, split across the SAFE taskforce and the main schools service, where the caseload is varied. The post-holder will have responsibility for designated schools where they will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and management of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and will be responsible for supporting a range of young people, parents and multiagency partners.

We are based at the child development centre in Stratford, in the London Borough of Newham, close to the Olympic Park in the heart of London's East End (with excellent transport links with the rest of London and Essex). The children and young person's speech and language therapy service has a strong multi-agency work ethic with other services both within the trust and with partner agencies, and offers services across a wide range of care groups in the borough.

The post-holder will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and management of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and other associated language learning and communication impairments for young people as part of new SAFE taskforce speech and language therapy team, which is part of the London Borough of Newhams Youth Safety Strategy. The SAFE programme provides early intervention for vulnerable young people in school years 5-9, and looks to provide a prevent model of support.
The post holder will be responsible for supporting caseworkers, parents and other professionals in order to best support young people in relevant educational and community environments. This may involve training and modelling strategies to others working with the young person. The post holder will work within the Newham Service to Schools, where they will use and continue to develop specialist skills and knowledge with children of school age. This will include planning, implementing and evaluating therapy to primary and/or secondary school-aged children with a range of speech/language/communication difficulties.
They will independently manage a large and complex caseload of children with diverse communication difficulties in mainstream schools, with a particular emphasis on liaison with school based staff, sharing information and training staff in delivering therapy recommendations.
They will provide a service that takes account of the needs of clients from a range of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.
