Job summary

As a Cardiac Assistant you will work within the ECG - Cardiology out-patient department, providing high quality of care, compassion and personal care to patients and their families/carers. In order to do this, you would need to maintain high professional standards, effective communication, high level of confidence, be very organised and exhibit the Trust values.

The main duties of the role will be to fit and download cardiac ambulatory monitors, perform ECG's and measurements of vital signs when required. Part of this role will involve the co-ordination of inpatient echo lists and the support of patient pre and post echocardiogram. As a cardiac assistant, you will be expected to demonstrate effective leadership within the department, by supporting staff, auditing equipment and raising concerns, taking the responsibility for the monitoring of patients when required and initiating interventions to address risks to health and safety and quality, and manage interventions to improve the service.

Support & training will be provided by a team of professionals and an experienced leadership team who are committed to service improvement.

The job role is part-time 16 hours per week covering Wednesday and Fridays only 08:00-16:30.

Main duties of the job

  • To prepare patients for ambulatory cardiac monitoring i.e. Preparation of individual monitoring devices for each individual patient - including initialising the device with patient demographic, correct monitoring format as per referral information, appropriate fitting of the device to maximise clarity of recording, correct instruction to the patient as to use of device, recording of patient activity, refitting of device during extending monitoring periods. Trouble shooting and recognising errors. Correct downloading of device once returned to correct patient on analysing database systems and subsequent correct uploading of report to Solus and Advantis/ Evolve. Errors have immediate impact on patient treatment as can the wrong results being displayed on a patient's record.
  • Choosing correct cuff size for patients having ambulatory BP monitoring, troubleshooting and error recognition ie, problems with high BMI patients, cardiac arrhythmia affecting BP recording.
  • To accurately perform 12 lead ECG on patients attending the department - either for pre booked ECG appointments or urgent walk-ins or as requested by Physiologists/Cardiac nurses/Cardiology Consultants during another patient procedure.

  • To assist the Cardiac Physiologists during patient examinations in the Cardiology Department working within the scope of department procedures and practices.
  • To be responsible for the care and comfort of the patient whilst in the Department and throughout their examination.
Communications
  • To liaise with ward staff and porter team on a daily basis regarding referrals for IP referral, the position in the waiting lists, prioritisation and triage as per Physiologist advice. To book inpatients for routine echo, as per physiologist triage, ascertaining mobility and other issues and booking appropriate transfer method (trolley/chair/ oxygen/ escort required) to ensure smooth running of these scan lists.
  • To maintain good working relationships with other disciplines of staff within the Trust and the Directorate.
  • To maintain a high standard of communication with all patients/ visitors/external organisations to the cardiology ECG Department and Trust.
  • To communicate effectively with patients and carers providing an appropriate level of support particularly where there are barriers or difficulties with understanding and tact.

To receive Team Brief monthly and attend monthly Departmental staff meetings when possible

Keep up to date with all internal communications (Trust, division and department memos, e-mails, newsletters, team brief).

To report any breakdown or malfunction of equipment immediately to the appropriate Cardiac Physiologists & support with the returns policy (malfunction advice)

Responsibility for Patient Care
  • To participate in the staff appraisal system and agree your personal development plan with your line Manager.
  • To demonstrate own activities to new or less experienced colleagues in order to support clinical competencies
Planning and organising
  • To assist with the management of patient lists co-ordinating the porters, ensuring an efficient, robust service delivery.
  • To prepare the examination room according to individual Physiologists (echocardiographer/ sonographer) scanning methods. Positioning of ultrasound machine, couch and privacy screen.

Responsibilities for Physical and/or Financial Resources

  • To be responsible for the care and ensure cleanliness and superficial maintenance of associated radiographic equipment
  • To maintain adequate levels of stock in all areas of the Cardiology ECG Department, ordering weekly or more frequently a required and alerting Physiologists to potential issues with stock.
Responsibility for Policy and Service Development and Implementation
  • To adhere to Trust and Departmental policies, procedures and working practices. To be aware of and comply with systems of work, local rules and policies and procedures ensuring a safe environment for staff, patients and visitors
  • To conform to safety regulations by wearing protective equipment provided as appropriate, in the event of splashes/spillages of chemical/body fluids.
  • Do not attempt to undertake any roles or tasks outside of or beyond your competence
  • Report any untoward incidences or accidents using the Datix incident reporting system with the supervising radiographer/technologist
Responsibilities for Human Resources and Leadership
  • To participate in the staff appraisal system and agree your personal development plan with your line Manager.
  • To demonstrate own activities to new or less experienced colleagues in order to support clinical competencies.
Responsibilities for Teaching and Training
  • To participate in the induction and in-house training of new staff as instructed by the Cardiac Physiologist
  • Work with internal work-based assessors on gaining internal competencies and regular direct observation procedure to maintain regular competencies.
Responsibilities for data and information resources
  • To enter referral data through registration and documentation of resources on the Cardiology information system.
  • To obtain other patient information from Trust Patient systems, - PAS, Solus Cardiology and Patient Centre, and ability to retrieve referrals by these systems where necessary.
  • To accurately check and record patients results prior to cardiology examinations e.g previous cardiac diagnostic history in order to aid patient triage.
  • To perform other general clerical duties associated with the role as required for example contacting patients for last minute cancellations and booking as required.
  • Pre-registration of patient referrals for the echocardiography and cardiac rhythm management services where necessary
Research, Development and Audit
  • To participate in patient survey collection and contribute to safety audits as necessary
  • To be willing to train in new skills and take on new roles.
