Job summary

The post holder will be part of the multidisciplinary staff wellbeing and occupational health team who will be able to participate in the on-going development and evolution of our occupational health services to the Trust and to our neighbouring Trust in Tameside. The successful candidate will continue to support a clinically excellent well led occupational health service that consistently delivers high quality, cost effective services to all NHS staff working across both Trusts and to our external customers. It is an exciting opportunity for the appointed consultant to work alongside the existing consultant to contribute to the shaping of the future delivery of the service.

As one of the Consultant Occupational Physicians, you will carry a clinical caseload and will provide clinical leadership in accordance with established service level agreements or contracts and ensure advice and guidance complies with relevant legal and professional standards.

Main duties of the job

Main duties and responsibilities

  • The post holder will play a key role in providing clinical work and leadership as well as contributing to overall service development, training, audit and quality assurance.
  • The post holder will provide support to ensure department is fully accredited to the standards for Safe, Effective, Quality, Occupational Health Service (SEQOHS).
  • Responsible for providing specialist expertise and clinical input on all aspects of occupational health that meets the highest professional standards of a consultant in occupational health.

Clinical activities:

The post holder will have a clinical caseload and will support the nursing team and STs with their casework. The clinical work will include:

  • Management referrals
  • Pre-placement assessments
  • Self-referrals
  • Post exposure advice and prophylaxis for high-risk blood exposure incidents
  • Case conference / case discussions
  • Workplace assessments - providing advice on assessment and management of health risks in the workplace
  • Providing advice on assessment and management of environmental risks
  • Health surveillance
  • Capability assessments
  • Ill health retirement
  • Ensuring compliance with legislative requirements
  • Medical input into accident / incident investigations
  • Policy writing, attending Trust wide committee meetings, clinical governance activities
  • Attendance at relevant committees and groups
  • Supporting the OH nursing team in their activities including immunisation programmes, management of sharps injuries

Provision of urgent treatment when indicated, following certain occupational injuries/exposure to infection.

Management and Leadership

  • Work in conjunction with the Lead OH Consultant, Nurse Manager and Business Manager to analyse the needs of the OH business and assist with the design and development of a structure and infrastructure to support excellence in service delivery.
  • Effective contribution to reaching the Trusts vision, strategic objectives and key work programmes.
  • Actively contribute to and influence the formulation of strategic management of employee health, safety and welfare issues to enable the provision of a safer, healthier environment for employees, patients and visitors.
  • Contribute to the development of the Staff Wellbeing and OH service.
  • Actively promote employee health and wellbeing.
