Job summary

This role is key in developing and maintaining high standards of care for women and their families experiencing mental health problems during the pregnancy continuum. You will have detailed knowledge and skills to manage, develop and lead the care for pregnant women and new mothers in this defined group.

You will be providing and receiving highly complex, highly sensitive or highly contentious information, where developed persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or re-assurance skills are required. This may be because agreement or co-operation is required or because there are barriers to understanding.

There will be a responsibility for providing midwifery care to women with more severe mental health problems, working in partnership with mental health services. You will work closely with women and their families to plan and coordinate their care based on their individual care needs; linking with the maternity service and other services to ensure that relevant pathways, policies and processes are developed, implemented and audited in line with local and national targets.

To take the lead supporting colleagues through coordinating and providing training and guidance in maternal mental health for key maternity and medical staff, to facilitate holistic care that optimises mental as well as physical health.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Perinatal mental health (MH) midwife is an expert and local champion who will lead work to develop services in conjunction with maternity service commissioners and providers. They will be a key element in developing and maintaining high standards of care for women and their families with mental health challenges during pregnancy and the postnatal period.

The post holder will lead on the provision of Midwifery led accessible services for pregnant women with perinatal mental illness during pregnancy by working with the Community Matron and colleagues within Stockport family, Safeguarding, Maternity services, communities and the wider Trust to enable a

coordinated approach towards ensuring local specialist perinatal services for vulnerable women & their babies are maintained.

The post holder will ensure the commitment to community and inpatient based perinatal mental health services which support early intervention and integrated therapeutic approaches towards improving mental health and positive infant parent relationships. This will include working closely with the infant parent psychologist 1001 days lead, and the named Safeguarding Midwife with responsibility for the protection of vulnerable babies and their families with complex social needs
