Job summary
This is an excellent opportunity to join theGeneral Surgery department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The successful applicant will join a service that prides itself in effective leadership, innovative thinking, and excellent teamwork. Thisappointment based at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage but may have clinical activity at other satellite sites. The Lister Hospital enjoys a unique geographical location close to London and Cambridge and the Trust has a reputation for commitment to the highest standards of care, but also for a friendly and supportive approach.
Main duties of the job
- Shared responsibility for the day-to-day management of the General and Emergency Surgery service and participation in strategic planning
- Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
- Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity
- Active participation in continuing medical education

- Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
- MBChB (or equivalent) qualification
- FRCS (or equivalent) qualification
- Licence to practice
Desirable
- Postgraduate degree (or equivalent) related to General Surgery (eg Masters / MD / MRes / PhD etc)
Previous Experience
Essential
- Wide range of experience in General and Emergency Surgery
- Demonstrable training in Colorectal Surgery
- Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training, and other colleagues
- Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent diagnostic opinion, and to be able to take full responsibility for independent management of patients
- Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidencebased practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
- Demonstrable experience and participation in research

- Experience of General and Emergency Surgery in UK Major Hospital
- Demonstrable General Surgery consultant level experience
