Job summary
This is an excellent opportunity within the Plastic Surgery department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The appointee will be expected to cover clinical sessions specified in the provisional job plan, as below. The appointee will join a team of eight consultants, three specialty doctors and a full complement of junior and support staff. The ability to work closely and flexibly with colleagues including consultants, junior staff and management team is an essential requirement for this appointment.
Main duties of the job
Clinical & Surgical Duties

Perform reconstructive and restorative surgeries of the hand, wrist, and forearm (e.g., tendon repairs, nerve repairs, fracture fixation, microsurgery).

Conduct microsurgical procedures, including revascularization and replantation of digits.

Treat congenital hand deformities, traumatic injuries, and degenerative conditions.

Manage complex soft-tissue injuries, wounds, and infections of the upper extremity.

Perform elective procedures such as carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release, and Dupuytren's contracture surgery.

Provide perioperative care, including pre-operative evaluation and post-operative follow-up.

Interpret diagnostic imaging (X-rays, CT, MRI, ultrasound) relevant to upper-extremity conditions.
Patient Management -
Conduct detailed assessments of hand function, sensation, mobility, and vascular status.

Develop individualized treatment plans combining surgical and nonsurgical options.

Collaborate with physiotherapists and occupational/hand therapists to optimize rehabilitation.

Counsel patients and families regarding injury, prognosis, surgical options, and recovery expectations.

Provide emergency coverage for acute upper-extremity trauma.
