Job summary

This is an excellent opportunity to join the Neonatology department at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. We strive to challenge our existing working practices and to constantly improve our service to deliver best practice guidance and to ensure that our patient outcomes are successful, and the family feel valued during their visits to the Trust.This is a whole time equivalent substantive Neonatal consultant post and the successful applicant will share the responsibilities for providing acute neonatal care at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage. Outpatient clinics are based at the Lister Hospital and QE 2 Hospital in Welwyn Garden City. Our Neonatal unit is a local neonatal unit (LNU) part of East of England (EOE) Neonatal Network. The post comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs) and includes an on-call commitment of 1:7 exclusive for the Local Neonatal Unit. There is no Acute paediatric commitment to this post.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join the existing 6 Neonatal consultants in the delivery of the neonatal care and will participate in 1:7 on call rota for weekdays and weekends. There will be no Acute Paediatric commitments. The consultant responsibilities include but not limited to:

1. The provision of neonatal inpatient care & outpatient clinics.

2. The development and delivery of the neonatal services at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

4. The supervision and training of junior medical staff, including the advanced neonatal nurse practitioner, in the care of babies admitted to the neonatal unit, resuscitation and care of babies in the maternity unit (Consultant Led Unit, Midwife Led Unit and post-natal ward)

5. Be available to advise the maternity team on matters concerning the care of babies

6. Work collaboratively with Acute Paediatric team, Maternity and Nursing team.

7. Clinical governance and compliance with the Trust's requirements in clinical governance

8. Work collaboratively with clinicians within the East of England Operational Delivery Network (ODN), LMNS, ICB in the planning, delivery and monitoring of neonatal care.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register / and Full GMC registration with a Licence to Practice
  • MBBS and MRCPCH or qualification of an equivalent level
  • Paediatric CCT with the interest in Neonatology, should have done SPIN training (12-18 months) in Neonates (or equivalent) at Registrar level or senior level

Desirable

  • Interest in Paediatric and Neonatal cardiology and ability to perform Echocardiogram (ECHO).
  • Neonatal CCT or Postgraduate degree (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential

  • Broad range of experience in Neonatology and General Paediatrics training/experience at Registrar level
  • Minimum of 12-18 months neonatal experience in a level 3 unit (Tertiary) at Registrar level or senior level OR At least 2 years' experience at registrar level or senior level wor ing in a local Neonatal unit (LNU)
  • Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
  • Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
  • Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training & BLS Training
  • NLS/ARNI provider
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidencebased practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives
