Research Fellow in ENT

Job summary

Applications are invited for a full-time post of Research Fellow in Ear Nose and Throat (ENT)Surgery (50% clinical, 50% research). The post is based at the Lister Hospital, Stevenageand is designed to provide a platform for a registrar level surgeon to advance their clinical aswell as their research skills by registering for a higher degree through existing links with theUniversity of Hertfordshire.

The successful applicant will be engaged in ENT research, working towards a higher degreein ENT (MD or PhD). Our ENT department is research active and is currently recruitingpatients in Otology, Rhinology and Head and Neck Surgery research studies. The main areaof research will depend on the department's research priorities and the successful applicant'ssubspecialty of interest. There will also be a requirement to help support the research team ofnurses to recruit patients into commercial clinical trials and registries that are ongoing.

There will be a defined teaching responsibility and the potential for collaborativeresearch projects to be developed. Experience in ENT at SHO level is essential. Thepost-holder will be supervised in operating lists and clinics and will not be part of the outof hours on-call rota.The successful applicant will be responsible to the Associate Medical Director forResearch.

Main duties of the job

ClinicalClinically, this is an excellent opportunity within the ENT unit at the Trust for the appointee to further theirinterest and surgical knowledge and skills. The ENT department performs regularly advanced earoperations (including bone conduction and middle ear implant work), advanced rhinology procedures (anduse of Navigation), transoral robotic surgery, trans-nasal oesophagoscopy, and has the largest cohort ofthyroid/parathyroid patients in Hertfordshire/ Bedfordshire. There are subspecialty clinics taking place daily(e.g hearing and balance, smell, thyroid and parathyroid, head and neck, paediatric) and different MDTsthat the fellow will be expected to attend. The post-holder will be supervised in operating lists andclinics. The post holder will be part of an on-call rota (1 in 7 hot weeks, 1 in 9 out of hour on calls ).

ResearchThe post-holder will have dedicated research time and will be expected to contribute to existingdepartmental projects, as well as initiate new projects aimed at achieving publications, nationalpresentations, and attracting funding for the department and the Trust.
