We are seeking consultants with enthusiasm, commitment and drive to work closely with colleagues throughout the organisation and within the community to help lead the organisation.

This is a substantive appointment, based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage. The post comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs). There is no on call commitment.

This is an excellent opportunity within the Pathology department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The successful applicant will form part of the Trust's pathology department and will be a part of the current team of 7 consultants providing a comprehensive Cellular Pathology service. The department provides a comprehensive range of services for our resident population of approximately 600,00 residing mainly in East and North Hertfordshire and extends to the borders of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, West Hertfordshire and Essex.

Main duties of the job

1. To participate in surgical cutup, surgical reporting, cytology reporting, thus ensuring the delivery of a high quality histopathology, cytopathology service.

2. To advise and be available for consultation on clinical matters both generally and on an individual patient basis with clinical colleagues in the hospital, general practitioners and Trust staff.

3. To participate in the training of the Clinical fellows.

4. To be responsible for interpretation of results and advise on appropriate further investigations where necessary.

5. To participate in the management of the service and work with laboratory staff and pathology management team to set clinical priorities and resolve operational problems.

6. To lead laboratory staff on clinical matters. The Consultant Pathologist will instruct and work with laboratory staff in the day to day handling of cases.

7. To participate in audit, accreditation and quality assurance schemes.

8. To undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the Royal College of Pathologists.

9. To comply with the Trust mandatory training program.

10. To advise the pathology management team on clinical matters relating to the service.

Essential

  • Full and specialist registration (and a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
