The Nuclear Medicine Department, part of the Radiation Services group at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, provides a wide range of diagnostic imaging and in-vitro investigations together with molecular radiotherapies. A new SPECT/CT imaging suite has been recently installed to support the introduction of dosimetry for our therapies. In addition to the clinical service at the Cancer Centre, we provide scientific, technical and radiation protection advice and support to nuclear medicine services at nine NHS Trusts throughout North West London and the Home Counties.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to participate in the delivery of the clinical nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapy service providing scientific and technical support. Following a period of training you will administer oral radionuclide therapies for patients with benign and malignant thyroid disease.

You will work closely with the Lead Clinical Scientists and Lead Practitioner to develop SPECT/CT image processing and analysis protocols. Working under the guidance and supervision of the RPA/RWA/MPE's you will provide nuclear medicine physics support to other hospitals and you will be expected to travel to these hospitals on a regular basis.

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Good (1st or 2nd Class) Honours degree in a relevant subject (physics or engineering).
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant branch of physics or medical physics to the level of at least a Master's degree (MSc)
  • State registration with the Health & Care Professions Council, as a Clinical Scientist.

Desirable

  • Completion of Scientist Training Programme (STP) or equivalent.
  • Applicants that can demonstrate they are close to completion of training and registration may be considered for initial appointment on band 6 until they have qualified and registered.

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Specialised training and practical experience in Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Protection.
  • Specialised training and practical experience in the use and quality assurance testing of a range of highly technical equipment
  • Experience in computing relevant to Nuclear Medicine.

Desirable

  • Experience in SPECT/CT imaging
  • Experience in Nuclear Medicine therapy procedures
  • Experience in radiopharmacy and / or cell labelling

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to use own judgement involving complex facts that require analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options as, for example, in analysing the results of scientific measurements or processes, which may conflict, and deciding upon an appropriate course of action.
  • Able to use Excel, Word etc. to set up documents and spreadsheets and extract information.

Desirable

  • Able to use and develop clinical applications software.

Knowledge
