We are recruiting for a Consultant in General Surgery who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.
This is an excellent opportunity to join the General Surgery department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The successful applicant will join a service that prides itself in effective leadership, innovative thinking, and excellent teamwork. We strive to challenge our existing working practices and constantly to improve our service to deliver best practice guidance. We aim to deliver successful patient outcomes, whilst allowing patients to feel valued during their visits to the Trust.
Main duties of the job
Maintenance of high-quality patient centred care
Shared responsibility for the day-to-day management of the service and participation in strategic planning
Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity
Active participation in continuing medical education

Essential
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
- MBChB (or equivalent) qualification
- FRCS (or equivalent) qualification
- Licence to practice
Desirable
- Postgraduate degree (or equivalent) related to General Surgery (e.g. Masters / MD / MRes / PhD etc)
Previous Experience
Essential
- Broad range of experience in General and Emergency Surgery
- Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
- Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
- Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
Desirable
- Experience of General and Emergency Surgery in UK Major Hospital
- Demonstrable General Surgery consultant level experience
- Evidence of independent upper and/or lower gastrointestinal endoscopy practice
- Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidencebased practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
- Demonstrable experience and participation in research
