Job summary

We are seeking a substantive, full-time consultant gastroenterologist with a subspeciality interest in Advanced Colonoscopy.

You will join a team of eleven gastroenterologists at West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who enjoy working together and supporting each other.

You should be a dynamic, competent clinician and endoscopist with a CCT in gastroenterology and general medicine and experience working within the NHS. To complement our team, you should demonstrate an interest in advanced colonoscopy. We been a screening centre for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) since 2008. The Lead for the BCSP service is Dr Macfarlane. BCSP lists are currently performed by two consultant Gastroenterologists and two nurse endoscopists. We perform complex EMR for large polyps. A colon capsule service has recently been established and it is expected that this appointee will take on this service. Small bowel capsule endoscopy is currently largely outsourced to a neighbouring trust but there are plans to repatriate this service in the near future.

There may be options to develop additional subspeciality interests in conjunction with departmental needs.

This post has 10 programmed activities. There is a 1:11 on-call rota for "consultant of the week" inpatient cover and overnight on-call for GI bleed.

Main duties of the job

Endoscopy (Elective, training, and inpatient emergency)

  • Outpatient work (Clinics, Referral Vetting, GP advice and guidance)
  • Inpatient work (Consultant of the week to cover GI ward, Ward referrals, ED

in-reach)

  • Weekend work (6 hours on site ward and emergency endoscopy)
  • MDT to discuss complex colonic polyps.
  • Clinical governance and service development and researc

You will be expected to be able to travel to all 3 Trust hospital Sites (Watford General Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans Hospital).

You will take part in clinical governance and clinical risk management, and in their implementation, including audit.
