Job summary

The successful consultant will be a general surgeon on the specialist registrar (or be within 3 months of their CCT).

They will have a major interest in emergency surgery and will be asked to declare a subspecialty interest at the time of interview. The job will be an even split between emergency surgery and their chosen specialty.

The successful applicant will join the 3 existing emergency surgeons in providing a comprehensive emergency surgical service as well as contributing to the General Surgical Service through their share of the elective specialty commitments.

Major elective surgery takes place on the Watford site, with day case surgery at St Albans City Hospital. Outpatient clinics take place on all three sites and endoscopy at both Watford and Hemel Hempstead. The final timetable will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

Clinical commitments follow a four-week rolling rota with week one of the rota designated to ESAU. The consultant is the point of referral for GP heralded and emergency department referrals and manages the activity of the on call surgical team, ensuring all patients are seen and assessed in a timely manner, have appropriate investigations and all management is led by a consultant surgeon. The consultant will be actively involved in the teaching of foundation year doctors, middle grades and nurses.

Week two is the emergency operating week, the emergency surgical consultant coordinates the activities in the CEPOD operating theatre to ensure appropriate prioritisation of patients on the list in conjunction with the surgical on-call consultant and the anaesthetic and other surgical teams.

The emergency consultant performs all emergency operating supported by additional members of the on-call team as appropriate.

The third and fourth weeks are designated for the specialty interest of the consultant.

The space is shared for both medical and surgical referrals from A&E and Primary Care following a trail period of combining MAU and ESAU during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ethos of EAU remains that all patients requiring assessment by the medical or surgical on-call teams are seen in EAU unless they meet one of the exclusion criteria as set out, in the standard operating procedure.
