Job summary
We are seeking to appoint 2 enthusiastic Consultant Rheumatologists to join our established team of 5 Consultants and 3 Specialist Nurses. We are a friendly, dynamic and cohesive department which requires expansion, leading to the creation of 2 new posts. Both are substantive full time dual posts in rheumatology and general medicine with 10 programmed activities (with an 8 DCC/ 2 SPA split). The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the acute unselected general medical on call consultant rota. There are exciting opportunities to develop specialist interest clinics which are welcomed and encouraged. Skills in musculoskeletal and temporal artery ultrasound would be welcomed but are not essential.
We have an established early inflammatory arthritis clinic, GCA pathway facilitated through the ambulatory care unit and DXA service. There is a weekly ILD MDT and MSK radiology MDT. We hold a monthly rheumatology clinical meeting and join the Eastern Deanery regional rheumatology academic meetings on a quarterly basis. We have access to regional specialist input via the Eastern Network of Rare Autoimmune Diseases (ENRAD) bi-monthly meetings.
Biologic day care infusions are delivered on the Watford General Hospital site by trained haematology chemotherapy nurses and supported by the rheumatology ward registrar.

Main duties of the job
The appointee will undertake 4 outpatient clinics per week. This will be split over 2 sites, either Watford General, Hemel Hempstead or St Albans City Hospital. For 2 weeks in every 12 weeks, the post holder would be solely based at Watford General Hospital and will manage a 17 bedded general medical ward, undertake a weekly emergency rheumatology clinic, oversee patient rheumatology referrals and triage rheumatology outpatient referrals via the electronic referral sytstem. During this period, general rheumatology clinics are paused.
In addition the post holder would be required to
- have continuing responsibility for patients under his/her care and the associated administrative duties
- have the ability to work within our team of consultants for the proper functioning of the department
- have the ability to train and support our junior doctors including 2 rheumatology specialist registrars, and team of rheumatology specialist nurses
- undertake teaching activites to support the undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programme
- have the intiative to develop sub-speciality clinics and expertise, which would be welcomed by the team
- be proactive in leading and developing clinical services
- engage in audit and quality improvement projects
- be involved with research whre appropriate
