Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 12-month fixed term Orthopaedic Consultant specifically for Trauma. The candidate will be someone who is highly skilled with fellowship experience in lower limb trauma, but competency in basic upper limb trauma is also desirable. It's likely this term would be extended, potentially to become a substantive post.

This position is to support with the expansion of services and planned opening of the Kent and Medway Orthopaedic Centre, which will allow extra capacity for trauma services to trauma patients admitted to MTW with additional support to the Kent and Medway System.

This post forms part of the recruitment programme for the new Kent and Medway Orthopaedic theatre complex at Maidstone Hospital.Over the next few months, the Trust will be recruiting to over200 new posts to support the Centre.

The new facility will consist of three open plan laminar flow theatres, a 14-bed inpatient ward and a 10-bed day case ward, recovery, x-ray and therapy space, all within a 'super-green' building.

Once complete,the theatres willexpand orthopaedic surgical capacity at MTW and provide increased capacity across Kent, Medway and East Sussex. This willplay an important part in elective recovery and the reduction of patient waiting times across the region. Currently, the build is on track for the opening at the end of March 2024

Main duties of the job

The post holder will complement the existing Trauma team at MTW, providing a general trauma service. The post will be across both sites. The majority of trauma surgery is based at Tunbridge Wells hospital with elective and day surgery performed on the Maidstone site once every fortnight. The trauma team will consist of two trauma consultants, trauma fellow and hip fracture fellow.

  1. To provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility.   6. To take an active responsibility for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and supervision.

  13. To ensure that you develop and maintain effective working relationships with those agencies concerned with the provision of health and social care services and those representing the interests of patients.
  14. To undertake an annual appraisal leading to a personal development plan as outlined in the Trust Appraisal Policy. You must collect and maintain sufficient evidence to support the appraisal process and your GMC revalidation. The appraisal will inform the study leave and job planning processes.
  15. To undertake an annual job plan review as outlined in the Trust Guide to Job Planning.
  16. You are required to take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others who may be affected by what you do while at work. You must adhere to Trust IRMER Regulations.
