Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in Glaucoma to join the Ophthalmology department at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

These are new posts, creating an exciting opportunity to further develop both medical and surgical glaucoma care in one of the largest ophthalmic departments in the South East that provides care for a population of 1.2 million people living in Mid and West Kent. The successful applicants will be expected to work predominantly at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells sites with out-patients sessions provided at Medway Maritime Hospital. These posts are whole-time appointments comprising of 10 PA's which includes an on-call commitment.

The department provides all levels of ophthalmic care to our population, from shared care through a large network of community optometrists to complex ophthalmic pathology and is recognised by NHS England as a provider of specialist commissioning. There is an active ophthalmic research unit with dedicated time allocated from ophthalmic research nurses, technicians, photographers and optometrists. There is the possibility to pursue basic science research interests via our active links with The University of Kent at Canterbury and the recent opening of the new Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) has provided exciting opportunities to engage with under graduate and post graduate training.

Main duties of the job

To ensure that you respond promptly and efficiently to all complaints related to any patient care you have been involved with, assisting the Trust's corporate responsibility to reply to complaints within a specified time frame.

To ensure that you develop and maintain effective working relationships with those agencies concerned with the provision of health and social care services and those representing the interests of patients.

You are required to take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others who may be affected by what you do while at work. You must adhere to Trust IRMER Regulations.

The post holders will be required to also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the Clinical Director or General Manager for Ophthalmology.

Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust was formed in 2000 as a result of the merger between Mid Kent Healthcare Trust (Maidstone Hospital) and the Kent & Sussex Weald Trust (Pembury and Kent & Sussex Hospitals).

The Trust opened a new hospital on the Pembury site in 2011. Out-reach eye clinics take place at Medway Maritime Hospital (Gillingham).

Maidstone and the Tunbridge Wells Hospitals currently provide: Accident & Emergency, Ear, Nose, and Throat, General Medicine, General Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Urology, and a comprehensive range of diagnostic and intensive care support services. Maidstone Hospital incorporates the regional specialist Kent Oncology Centre.
