Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust

Senior Clinical Fellow - Neurology

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

Our expanding service needs a new senior clinical fellow (SCF) at Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital. There is no on-call, or any commitment to stroke or general medicine. For quality of life close to London, come to beautiful and affluent west Kent, with two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and many excellent state grammar schools.

The job plan will include outpatient clinics in general neurology and headache, ward referrals, some specialist clinics, and weekly CPD sessions from King's College Hospital (remote). We aim to give similar levels of supervision and training to this non-training post as to our trainees.

This fixed-term post is for 6 months full time. Possible extension may be considered later according to clinical need. We will consider applicants who wish to work less than full time; the post duration could then be extended pro rata (e.g. 12 months if half time).

This new post will work with our ten neurologists, one neurology specialty registrar and two shared IMT3 doctors. The post will involve teaching medical students from Kent & Medway Medical School, which opened in 2020.

Main duties of the job

  • Outpatient clinics. General neurology and subspecialist.
  • Inpatient ward referrals and ward rounds
  • Procedures including Greater Occipital Nerve block and lumbar puncture.
  • Teaching medical students from Kent and Medway Medical School
  • Contributing to departmental meetings and audit.
  • There is no out of hours / on-call.
  • There is no commitment to cover acute stroke or general medicine.

This is a new post. The Trust has two acute hospitals each with a similar size of acute medicine and neurology service. The SCF will work at both Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals; we try to avoid the need to work on two sites on the same day. There is one other training-grade specialty registrar at MTW. We aim to provide similar training and supervision to both the SCF and the trainee registrar.

We would also consider appointing to the Specialty Doctor grade if preferred instead of SCF.

About us

The Trust is split across two sites, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals, which both have similar-sized neurology services and similar acute medical wards. The Trust covers a population around 500,000 and has around 4,000 new neurology outpatient attendances per year. Both hospitals are under an hour from central London by train, and have good road links.

The Trust is located in one of the most affluent and pleasant parts of Kent. Both Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells have several high quality state grammar schools, Kent being one of the few counties that still has these. Maidstone is the County Town of Kent and Tunbridge Wells is a Regency spa town, both with excellent shopping and facilities. The hospitals are set on the outskirts of the towns, adjacent to Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a short drive from sandy beaches. West Kent has many visitor attractions including pretty villages, historic castles, gardens and children's attractions, and is close to the Channel Tunnel and ports.
