Job summary
The Leicester Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) service was established in 1993 and is the largest NHS SEM service in the UK. Its main base is at Leicester General Hospital where it has dedicated space and runs activity daily, but also runs clinics 3 days per week at the National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine (NCSEM)
The established multi-disciplinary team includes 5 Consultants in Sport & Exercise Medicine (SEM), and a further Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Sports Injuries Surgery.
Clinical care is provided by three senior physiotherapists, one clinical nurse specialist, and a podiatrist.
There is the support of a full administration team and access to a complete range of hospital specialists is possible. The department has close links with local Universities, and we share Specialty Registrars with our neighbouring Sport and Exercise Medicine department at Nottingham University Hospitals.
Many of our Consultants hold national roles in our medical speciality. Previous post-holders have gone on to either join higher speciality training and/or set up community-based musculoskeletal clinics.
We have a long-running exercise induced lower limb pain clinic, which allows clinical assessment and investigations to occur within a single out-patient appointment. Also run by the department is an acute / sub-acute injury clinic, which assesses and treats a range of injuries along established pathways who are referred in from the Emergency Department.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of this post are to provide secondary care in the Sports & Exercise Medicine department as part of a multi - disciplinary team within Consultant - led clinics.
The post holder / s will work in NHS clinics held at the NCSEM at Loughborough University, and / or at the Leicester General Hospital. Through these, the post holder will assess and manage patients with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, under the care of a named Consultant, working in a broad multi - professional clinical service.
This post may appeal to General Practitioners, including portfolio GP's, who wish to further develop their experiences across the interface between primary and secondary care.
The post holder will have the support of a named Consultant mentor. We see this as a positive way to develop relationships with colleagues in primary care. As we move forward within our local Integrated Care System, it will be important that chronic MSK problems are diagnosed and managed effectively within low cost clinical environments.
About us
Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).
We have four primary goals:
- high-quality care for all,
- being a great place to work,
- partnerships for impact, and
- research and education excellence
And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.
Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
- we are compassionate,
- we are proud,
- we are inclusive, and
- we are one team
This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
