Job summary

This post encompasses the potential to train in colorectalsurgery for a one - two year period. The default will be sixmonths each of although there may well be flexibility toadjust this according to the applicants need. There may beopportunities to rotate between firms includingHepatopancreaticobiliary for instance. In view of therotations on offer, a job description of both posts is givenbelow.University Hospitals Leicester is the third largest acute trustin England and consists of three hospitals: Leicester RoyalInfirmary (LRI), Leicester General Hospital (LGH) andGlenfield Hospital (GH). The Leicester Royal Infirmary is thelargest of the three Hospitals and is based in the city centre.The LRI is a busy emergency centre with a large Accidentand Emergency unit that sees in excess of 10,000attendances a year. Approximately 300 emergencylaparotomies are undertaken at the LRI per year with closeconsultant supervision.

Main duties of the job

Colorectal surgery:The colorectal unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary offers the following:? Resectional surgery for colorectal cancer (the two combined colorectal unitsare the second busiest in the UK) including laparoscopic surgery? Early rectal cancer service? Locally advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer referral centre? Supraregional anal cancer service? Busy proctology service? Inflammatory bowel disease service including ileoanal pouch? Intestinal failure unit with home parenteral nutrition? Functional bowel/pelvic floor unit in collaboration with urogynaecology? Significant emergency surgery exposureThe weekly colorectal and anal cancer MDTs (including surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists and specialist nurses) allow ample training in the management of colorectal and anal cancer across the whole spectrum of disease. There is a weekly inflammatory bowel disease MDT with Gastroenterology. A weekly radiology meeting supported by specialist GI radiologists provides training in the interpretation of GI imaging.The colorectal unit is supported by diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. General surgery and specialist clinics (colorectal cancer, anal cancer, functionalbowel) occur regularly.

Oncall Rota Arrangements Cross-site 1 in 25 rota covering general surgery.

Clinical Training and Responsibilities Trainees within the unit are assessed using WBAs through ISCP. The fellows would be expected to subscribe to ISCP and engage with their clinical and educational supervisors in the same way that current trainees holding an NTN do.

Non-clinical Training and Responsibilities Fellows will be expected to work within the current team structure and will provide clinical support to junior medical staff. The unit has a flexible team based approach to patient care that the fellow will be expected to adopt. It is expected that all fellows will keep to date with their mandatory training and attend the weekly firm planning meetings.

Additional Training Opportunities The fellows will be expected to maintain CPD and there are both in-house and regional teaching provided to assist this. Opportunities for research and audit arealso available.
