Job summary

The East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre located at Glenfield Hospital for the adult service and the Leicester Royal Infirmary for the paediatric service, and sits within the Women's and Children's Clinical Management Group. It is a multidisciplinary service dedicated to the management of patients of all ages with congenital heart disease for the whole of the East Midlands; i.e. Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, South Derbyshire, most of Lincolnshire, West Cambridgeshire (Peterborough), Northamptonshire, and parts of Warwickshire. The population referral base for congenital heart disease is around 4.8 million and growing. The collaboration of colleagues from paediatric and adult congenital cardiology, congenital cardiac surgery and paediatric intensive care to form a single seamless service has resulted in a safe, productive and happy working environment to the benefit of our patients. A full range of services are provided with the exception of transplantation.

Main duties of the job

To achieve the minimum standard of 125 surgical cases per surgeon as set out in the NHSE service specifications

To participate in the paediatric cardiothoracic and ECMO on call rota's at a frequency of 1 in 4.

To help ensure stability of service delivery for both surgery and ECMO

To participate in and instigate audit activities within the directorate relevant to congenital cardiac surgery, or ECMO.

To sustain and develop teaching and research in conjunction with the University of Leicester, and to participate in and fulfil the requirements of the Royal College of Surgeons CPD scheme.

To participate in and continue to develop services for children and adults with congenital heart disease in the East Midlands, working with existing team of paediatric and adult congenital cardiologists, surgeons, intensivists and anaesthetists.

Work closely with our partners at network centres team to ensure communication is timely and efficient.

Supervise and train junior medical staff in all aspects of congenital surgery.

Work to help deliver the NHSE Congenital Heart Disease Standards & Specifications.

To encourage a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients.

To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit

  • oCan undertake independently both simple and complex congenital cardiac procedures in all age groups
  • oExperience in mentoring junior colleagues

Desirable
