Job summary

Locum Consultant in Adult cardiothoracic and general Intensive Care Medicine with an interest in Severe Acute Respiratory Failure (SARF) and ECMO

We are seeking a highly trained individual committed to Adult Intensive Care Medicine with experience in managing both general and cardiothoracic intensive care patients including those receiving ECMO support. Experience in transport of the critically ill adult is essential. The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual who has experience in this field and is driven to develop the SARF and adult ECMO service at UHL.

Clinical experience before appointment to this post may be supplemented following successful interview to support service needs. This includes in house training and the further development of ECMO management and cannulation skills should these be required.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
  • To provide daytime Consultant cover for the Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU) at the GH.
  • To participate in the AICU/ECMO Consultant on-call rota, which following this appointment will be a minimum 1 in 7.
  • To support the development and expansion of the SARF and Adult ECMO programme at UHL.
  • To participate in and assist with the development of the research programme in Critical Care and ECMO at UHL.
  • To supervise and train junior anaesthetic and intensive care medical and nursing staff.
  • To be involved in appraising and assessing junior doctors.
  • To actively participate in the nationally renowned ECMO and adult critical care transport courses held at Glenfield hospital.
  • To actively participate in the ECMO, TOE, Echocardiography/critical care ultrasound and FICM teaching programme provided by the department.
  • To take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
  • Teaching, audit, research and administration.

  • MB BS, MB ChB or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • FFICM or equivalent (2)
  • (EITHER) Eligible for entry/entered on the specialist register of the General Medical Council for Intensive Care Medicine.(2)
  • (OR) Possession of CESR/CCT/CESR(CP) in Intensive Care Medicine at date of interview or within 6 months of expected CCT/CESR(CP) completion at date of interview
