Job summary

The East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC) is a new facility at Leicester General Hospital, designed to play a key role in reducing long waits for treatment.

The EMPCC gives UHL a unique opportunity to transform how we deliver planned care services across the region. Our ambition supports excellence, innovation, and patient choice, leading the way regionally and nationally to establish the centre as a benchmark for others.

Crucially, the EMPCC will enable us to continue to deliver planned care even during the busiest periods for the parts of our hospital which focus on urgent and emergency care. This means we expect to see around 100,000 units of patient activity every year, focusing on high volume, low complexity activity. An elective hospital for the future, the EMPCC will deliver high quality care, help us to reduce health inequity and bring care closer to some of our deprived areas.

Part and full time positions considered, there will be a requirement to work a range of shifts including early and late shifts, with some elements of weekend working as well.

We require a well-motivated and enthusiastic individual to work as the Housekeeper within the Surgical Daycase Unit within the EMPCC. This role includes the undertaking of daily organisation, maintaining stock levels, providing meals to the patients and cleanliness of the environment.

You will be working with a fantastic and supportive team who will be happy to assist you as settle within the team. Regular feedback and one-to-one will be provided by your manager to ensure that you stay happy in your job.

Duties include stocking up, maintenance of equipment, also including general housekeeping of the unit. It is essential that you are able to work in an orderly and systematic manner, possess good literacy, IT, numeracy, communication and organisational skills.

You should have a caring attitude, as well as the ability to work effectively under direction as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You should possess excellent communication skills and the ability to liaise across multi agencies and multi-disciplinary departments.

Experience of working with the general public is essential.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Undertake the collection, ordering and distribution of patient food in a timely manner at appropriate meal times.
  • Taking menu orders directly from patients.
  • Taking delivery of food trolleys.
  • The serving of food trays directly to the patient.
  • Preparing patients for their meal and directly assisting patients assessed as suitable by the Registered Nurse.
  • The collection and return of trays to food trolleys, noting what patients have/have not eaten and report, where necessary to the nurse in charge.
  • Completing bedside food and drink charts.
  • Prepare and distribute water jugs to patients as required.
  • Prepare and distribute hot and cold drinks to patients as required.
  • Responsible on behalf of the Ward/Unit Manager for the correct care of ward mattresses and to assist the ward team with bed making.
  • Ensure housekeeping and day-to-day management of the kitchen is maintained in that:
  • The area, including any utensils, is clean and fit for use
  • The refrigerator temperature is recorded daily
  • Any consumable items are properly stored and within date
  • The ice/milk/drinks machines are cleaned and checked as per policy and guidelines at hospital site.
  • Monitor the adequacy of linen deliveries, reporting defects or inadequate supplies to the Ward/Unit Manager or nurse in charge of shift.
  • Keep the sluice and utility areas tidy and bag soiled linen in accordance with Trust policy.
  • To always act in a responsible and safe manner while in the wards and encourage a warm and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Always promote and practise the highest standards of hygiene and the prevention and control of infection.
  • Assist the team to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness of clinical based medical equipment i.e. dressing trolleys, drip stands.
  • Ensure and monitor that repairs are reported and carried out as quickly as possible on any broken equipment.
  • Monitor the clinical areas state of cleanliness, tidiness and carry out any other minor housekeeping duties as required, i.e. remove rubbish and tidy bedside lockers and tables.
  • Undertake the timely cleaning of a patients bed space / bed / patient locker to assist in patient flow. Assist in the undertaking of tasks as specified in the work schedule for the environment.
  • Participate in appropriate audits, i.e. clinical waste, family and friends under the direction of the Ward/Unit Manager or as delegated by the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Evaluate each water outlet within clinical area, flush if required and report to the Estates department via the electronic process.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining own and others health, safety and security and report to the Matron or Ward/Unit Manager any matters relating to safety or security.
