Job summary
Clinical Perfusion is a highly skilled and technical profession within the field of cardiac surgery, providing essential life support systems to patients undergoing routine and emergency cardiac surgery.
The Clinical Perfusion Department at Glenfield Hospital currently undertakes adult and neonatal/paediatric cases and also a large neonatal, paediatric and adult ECMO programme. Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump support is also undertaken as part of the daily role.
Main duties of the job
Learn and understand how to review patient's notes for relevant medical history, pathology and diagnosis and how this affects the clinical decision process regarding the conduct of extracorporeal support.
Under direct supervision, assemble, prime, de-air and manage extracorporeal devices and circuitry.
Be able to assess, interpret and manage a wide range of highly complex conflicting clinical information and use this information to take appropriate action.
Work under supervision as a Practitioner, ensuring that any actions undertaken during a clinical procedure are checked by a qualified Clinical Perfusionist.
To acquire an understanding and assist in the provision of a departmental autologous cell salvage service.
To acquire an understanding and assist in the management of an intra-aortic counter pulsation service.
To act and think clearly and calmly under acute and emergency situations.
To acquire an understanding of ECMO circuits and the mobile ECMO service.

The post holder will be managed continually and although there will be times when the post holder will be under direct supervision he/she should demonstrate a degree of initiative and be expected to work independently on designated tasks.
