Job summary
The role of Garden Maintenance Assistant is to maintain the Secret Garden and buildings given over to the project to ensure the areas are well maintained, safe and meet with visitor expectations.
Main duties of the job
From a day to day perspective the post holder will provide a general garden and light maintenance service to ensure the safe, efficient and effective running of the Secret Garden project. The post holder must be familiar with, able to operate safely, and service/maintain all machinery and tools/equipment provided, both fixed and portable.

KEY RESULT AREAS
Lawn cultivation, maintenance and edging
- Maintaining the flower and vegetable beds and all planters
- Maintaining hedges
- Weeding, Forking, mulching, watering, seed sowing, flower bed preparing and planting
- Leaf blowing, path clearing, salt spreading and snow clearing.
- Ensuring that all departmental workshop and storage areas are kept clean and tidy at all times
- Ensuring that appropriate tools/equipment are safely stored and serviceable and that the Secret Garden Project Lead is given adequate notice of the need to replenish stores and equipment, including machinery repairs.
- Keep an up to date inventory log of all equipment/stores
- Assisting and overseeing contractors whilst on site, making sure they carry out their works to the correct Health and Safety standards and abide by UHL Trust Policies and procedures.
- Ensuring that all machinery and tools are serviced in accordance with published standards and that service records are maintained.
- As required by the Secret Garden Project Lead, assist in the performance of other whole team duties occasionally undertaken by members of the Secret Garden team, for example open days and social events.
- Complying with both Statutory and Trust Health & Safety Policies and procedures, maintaining records and control of substances covered by COSHH plus other regulations. In particular, it is the post holders responsibility to ensure compliance with all statutory and local instructions regarding use of tools and machinery, wearing of protective clothing including footwear and ear defenders, working at height, lifting and lone working.
- Where applicable, the post holder may be required to support with the supervision of garden volunteer activity programmes.
