Job summary

We have a fantastic opportunity to join our growing and developing Echocardiography Department as a Band 7 Highly Specialised Physiologist.

University Hospitals of Leicester is made up of three hospitals located around the county. Glenfield Hospital is a tertiary Cardiology referral centre providing specialised Cardiology services to Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Smaller satellite Cardiac Investigations departments are located at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital.

As a tertiary cardiac centre, we provide echocardiography support to a wide range of specialties including cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, TAVI, electrophysiology procedures, inherited cardiac conditions, heart failure, cardio-oncology and cardiac rhythm management. Additionally, we provide an Echo service to 3 intensive care units and a large CCU.

Currently we offer physiologist led services in bubble and contrast studies and we are developing physiologist led services in stress echo (exercise and pharmacological), TOE and valve clinics. We have recently applied for BSE departmental accreditation and we are working towards the BSE quality assurance accreditation.

Our department has a range of high specification echocardiography machines and analytical software. All of which have strain and 3D capability. We have a multi-vendor fleet of echo machines ranging from GE, Phillips and Siemens.

Main duties of the job

- The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that waiting list targets are met utilising demand and capacity.

- The post holder needs to retain clinical expertise according to the echo service need, possessing excellent technical knowledge being a lead specialist whilst remaining visible, accessible and responsive to the needs of the service user, patient and public.

- Performing and interpreting highly specialist echo diagnostic tests according to the BSE guidelines and protocols along with providing specialist advice to clinicians.

- To assist and develop all areas of this service, including ways ofworking, in line with associated professional and government papers and targets in this specialty.

- Liaising with consultant Clinical Lead for echocardiography and Clinical Physiology leads within the Cardiac Investigations Department to maintain existing departmental practices and develop any appropriate services required in keeping with UHL agreement

- Participate in 7 day working including weekends, evenings and bank holidays, as appropriate participate in departmental on-call rota as necessary

Post holder is responsible for contributing to the day-to-day smooth running and provision of echo services across the three sites.

This includes:1. Independently performing diagnostic echocardiography and producing high quality reports both inpatients and outpatients.2. Effectively organise and prioritise own day-to-day caseload according to the clinical urgency, providing timely appropriate service.3. Supervise and provide training to non BSE accredited staff, who may be from various disciplines and grades.4. On occasion, provide advice to other local hospitals on their echocardiographic findings when these are complex and they require additional support.5. Responsible for maintaining own CPD and the acquisition of additional specialised techniques.6. Participate in department review/audit processes7. Participate in regular department meetings to develop improvements to the service and implement any agreed changes8. Responsible for daily and preventative maintenance and arranging service of echo machinery.9. Participate in technical appraisals of new equipment.10. Be involved in and assist with clinical trials and audit as identified by the Senior Chief Cardiac Physiologist.
