Job summary

Applications are invited for the position of Locum Consultant Nephrologist (10 PAs). Working within the Renal and transplant Service to provide cover of clinical duties including care of inpatients with kidney disease, general nephrology and specialist out-patients.

The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic and supportive team of foundation doctors, core medical trainees, specialist registrars and an associate specialist, supporting a team of 11(8 WTE) nephrology consultants and 5 transplant surgeons.

This is an exciting opportunity for a doctor who has several years of experience of acute internal medicine and/or nephrology to obtain in-depth experience in a speciality which includes both acute medicine and chronic disease management. The John Walls Renal Unit has a track record of innovative service delivery and of excellence in training and clinical research.

We offer a comprehensive range of Nephrology services for the population of the East Midlands Renal Network. These services include - Acute and Chronic haemodialysis, CAPD, home haemodialysis, OPD nephrology and pre and post kidney transplant follow up (but excluding acute kidney transplantation). The department has developed Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) services, and consultants have worked on AKI projects locally, regionally, and nationally

Main duties of the job

  • Ward cover for 18-20 weeks per year alongside other consultant colleagues
  • To undertake general nephrology outpatient clinics and/or specialist clinics
  • To participate in the consultant rotas for the nephrology service including consultant of the week (approx. 1 week in 10) and the on call rota out of hours and at weekends (1:8)
  • To supervise and train junior medical staff.

There is a mentorship scheme for all new consultant staff. This is designed to help new appointees to settle into working at UHL and to assist individuals in a personal way to familiarise them with the Trust and how things work in practice.
