We're looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our fast-paced and energetic team as a Flow Manager. Our Flow Managers spend lots of time on their feet, problem solving with clinical teams to support patient flow.
You will be a core part of the team, working with doctors, nurses, practitioners, managers, and administrators to make improvements to all the areas for both staff and patients. Our Emergency Floor is made up of one of the largest Emergency Departments in England, a thriving ambulatory care unit, and over 80 medical assessment beds.
We strive to continuously review the way we work and how care is delivered to ensure it meets the ever-growing levels of patient demand and provision of world-class healthcare. So we need someone who is a logical thinker, who can think on their feet.
Applicants for this busy and dynamic role will need to have demonstrable experience of monitoring performance against healthcare targets; managing a team of other staff and operational management. They will also be an excellent communicator, both verbal and written, and will need to understand and report on complex performance information.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder is accountable for the Emergency Department performance against all national emergency standards.

The post-holder will work closely alongside the medical and nursing leads to ensure effective and efficient patient management through the Emergency Department providing support to clinical staff to reduce delays.

The post-holder will be required to communicate with and build strong relationships with specialties outside of the Emergency Department. This will include stakeholders internal and external to UHL including Acute Specialities, EMAS, Radiology, Pathology, Social Services, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, diagnostic departments and the Site Management Team.

The post-holder will be given regular protected time to deliver discreet projects, focused on improving performance.

Be based on the Emergency Floor, supporting clinical staff to ensure delivery of the 4 hour target.

To be accountable for the numbers of non-admitted breaches in the Department when on shift.
-
To co-ordinate the flow of the Emergency Department, maintaining patient safety, regularly walking the Emergency Floor including GPAU and Children's with the EPiC (Emergency Practitioner in Charge) and NiC (Nurse in Charge).

Use Nerve Centre to maintain situational awareness, highlighting and solving issues across the Emergency Floor.

Work with the Matron of the day to understand Nurse staffing issues and other mitigating factors that may influence the level of responsiveness on the day.

Escalate specialty reviews or referrals in a timely manner.
-
To demonstrate the ability to work independently and autonomously.

To escalate quickly to the Operational Management team if problems are outside of remit to resolve.

To be accountable, in close collaboration with the Head of Services and Head of Operations for the delivery of an effective service by defining and overseeing the development of service standards in line with Government, Trust and Professional Policy and Guidance.

To ensure that the Emergency Floor is well coordinated across the multi-disciplinary teams within the service.

To ensure development, implementation and adherence by staff to programmes of care and clinical protocols to meet the needs of patients, ensuring use of interdisciplinary teamwork, as appropriate

To be involved with the Head of Service for developing, implementing and monitoring the Clinical Governance strategy for the service, in line with Trust and National objectives. This includes the implementation of systems for identifying and reporting clinical risk and making recommendations for clinical risk management.

To support the quality of service delivery by implementing and maintaining quality assurance and service improvement initiatives.

The post holder will manage the ED patient flow alongside the NIC and EPIC, having a proven track record of delivery along with experience of Flow management within the NHS.

Demonstrate leadership abilities to support, enable and inspire all members of the multi-professional team in the provision of safe, comprehensive care to patients, in the appropriate environment.

To assist the Head of Service to develop an implementation programme for the knowledge and skills framework within the service area, ensuring differentiated competencies are developed appropriately.
