The post is based within the Department of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, and will be for 1 year. We are a well-established regional tertiary centre for the management of patients with Infectious Diseases including complex HIV, TB, infections in the returned traveller, and out-patient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT). The department includes a purpose-built 18-bed ID unit including 10 negative-pressure side rooms, and runs over 10 out-patient clinics per week. We are significantly involved in medical education with the University of Leicester Medical School, and are active in clinical research including a faculty of academic clinical fellows and lecturers working in the areas of TB and COVID-19, amongst others.

The post holder will join a dynamic and supportive group of 7 ID consultants and 4-5 other specialty trainees in Infection, as well as the wider multi-disciplinary team. They will have the opportunity to gain extensive clinical knowledge in the in-patient and out-patient management of Infectious Diseases, with plenty of educational opportunities. We particularly welcome applicants who have a future interest in applying for specialty training in Infection (Infectious Diseases / Microbiology / Virology).

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

  • Participate in the in-patient care of patients with Infectious Diseases on the IDU, including HIV, TB, infection in the returned traveller, pyrexia of unknown origin, and general medicine.
  • Participate in the out-patient care for patients with Infectious Diseases, including HIV, viral hepatitis, TB, general ID, and OPAT.
  • Review ID referrals and give specialist advice to other clinicians/departments within the trust and the region, as well as to GPs.
  • Participate in ID MDT meetings, including radiology, HIV, viral hepatitis, OPAT.
  • Participate in the teaching of 3rd year medical students on clinical placement.
  • GIM/Acute medicine on-call commitment is optional. There may be a supplement for weekend work on IDU 9am - 3pm.

Training

  • Training will be given in the care and management of patients with a wide range of infections. Direct supervision will be via the on-call ID consultant. The post-holder will be allocated a clinical and educational supervisor (ID consultant).
  • The post-holder will be encouraged to attend local and regional ID teaching, as well as national and international meetings, in line with other specialty trainees in Infection.
  • The post-holder will be encouraged to participate in the departmental teaching programme, audit, QIPP projects, and research as appropriate.
