Job summary

Emergency and SpecialtyMedicine (ESM) CMG require an enthusiastic and organizedindividual to work as a Bed Coordinator to support and help manage the day to day hospital capacity at the Leicester General and Leicester Royal site.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team of Bed Bed-coordinators, line managed by a Flow Coordinator covering 7 days a week on a Rota basis.

The candidate will need excellent communication skills and be able to co-ordinate and collate real time information on current and predicted bed availability in their respective clinical areas, facilitating the effective use of the acute hospital and community wide bed capacity. The post holder will work independently, using their own initiative / judgment and without direct supervision. This role is pivotal to the flow of patients within ESM and meeting the national waiting times for the Emergency Department.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be responsible for facilitating the admission and discharge of emergency patients across all ESM at both the Leicester General Hospital and Leicester Royal Infirmary.

  • This position requires the post holder to co-ordinate and organise the effective bed usage, in an extremely pressurised environment.

  • The post holder will facilitate admission of emergency and acute medical patients to the appropriate specialities within the ESM Clinical Management Group (ESM CMG).

  • To co-ordinate and collate real time information on current and predicted bed availability in the ESM CMG, facilitating the effective use of the acute hospital and community wide bed capacity.

  • The post holder will work independently, using their own initiative/judgement and without direct supervision.

  • This role is pivotal to the flow of patients within the ESM CMG and meeting the national waiting times to support Emergency Department at the LRI.

  • Attend morning bed meeting, collect names of potential and definite discharges, collect bed availability numbers from each ward and speciality.

  • Report figures to site Duty Manager, maintain and manage the transfer list for internal and external patients, be a single point of reference for the senior team in relation to any bed management communication, moves, side room availability, Infection control restrictions and internal ITU step downs.

  • Ensure bed figures are kept upto date and remain accurate throughout the day. Liaise with the flow co-ordinator to maintain patient flow through AMU, liaise with all teams involved in discharge, flow and capacity to ensure continuous, clear and concise communication.

  • Be responsible for the day-to-day co-ordination of medical admissions and discharges to the clinical areas in the ESM CMG contributing to the efficient team working within this process by liaising with the Duty Manager, Nurse coordinators and medical teams

  • Effectively communicate with the key staff within the Trust involved with the emergency medical admission process where appropriate using their own judgement to problem solve to resolve the issues or to escalate to senior management were indicated

  • Manage all admissions to the ESM CMG and support the Emergency Department to ensure that the national 4 hour waiting time target is achieved.

  • Using a variety of tools including Real Time Bed Management System ensure utilisation of beds within the Directorate is maximised.

  • Collect data from a variety of reports to provide administrative support to the Site Lead Team to assist and support the clinical teams in the base wards achieving timely and effective discharges from hospital.

  • In conjunction with the Duty Manager/ Medical Teams manage patients with infections by identifying availability of side rooms and escalating infection issues in wards where no side rooms are available.

  • To facilitate and co-ordinate on a day-to-day basis the smooth admission process of emergency and elective patients from the Emergency Department, Bed Bureau and outpatient clinics.

  • To negotiation and influence the prioritisation of admissions in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, taking into account of bed availability within the Directorate.
